<div class="quote-block">WASHINGTON -- In a sweeping advance for gay rights, the Supreme Court ruled for the first time yesterday that gays and lesbians have a constitutional right to form intimate relationships, including sexual activity.<br><br><br><br>
The court, in a 6-3 decision that showed signs of a deep emotional rift among the justices, overruled a 1986 decision that had allowed criminal prosecution of same-sex couples when they engage in sex in private and by mutual consent. Five of the nine justices supported that part of the ruling.<br><br><br><br>
That 1986 decision, Bowers v. Hardwick, ''should be and now is overruled,'' Justice Anthony M. Kennedy wrote for the majority. The ruling ''was not correct when it was decided, and it is not correct today,'' he said.</div>

Wow. Seems like you just can't go two days without hearing some sort of new gay rights somewhere. This news will certainly change things for the better in the coming years.

It's about time they let consenting adults of any sex enjoy themselves in the comforts of their homes.<br><br><br><br>
I am curious how this will affect such laws as "escort" services and even prostitution. The deciding factor here seems to be that it is a right for consenting adults to engage in sexual activity in private. It seems to me it could be argued that prostitution is a private sexual activity among consenting adults.<br><br><br><br>
It'll be interesting to see what follows this ruling.

cool. here they legalized same sex marriages just recently. the next day in toronto over half the marriages that happened were same sex. everyone ran off and did it quick before the gov't could change their minds.

I read that a protester held up a sign that read "Saddamy-Free Zone." Because apparently homosexual activity in the United States is responsible for the conflict in the Middle East. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=""><br><br><br><br>
Anyway, I'm happy that the men of VB can now love each other freely. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/pimp.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":tame:">

Living in Canada, I really wasn't aware that they actually had a law against sodomy... between consenting adults that is.<br><br>
The government should have no say in what goes on in the bedroom of two consenting adults. It's none of their business as far as I'm concerned.

what makes me mad is when people say gays can't get married because it would ruin the sanctity(sp) of marriage. but its ok apparently for there to be shows like who wants to marry a multi millionare, joe millionare, and so on. whats the big deal if gay people want to get married. i just don't get it

It's interesting that you ask that Robert, because in his dissenting opinion, Justice Scalia wrote that "the decision calls into question state laws against everything from bigamy and same-sex marriage to incest <b>and prostitution</b>." He went on to say "The court has largely signed on to the so-called homosexual agenda."<br><br><br><br>
So it's true? There is a homosexual agenda.

Good decision, but not quite the landmark that gays and lesbians are proclaiming. Sodomy was already legal in 37 states, and with the exception of this incident in Texas, rarely (mostly never) prosecuted.

I wondered about that. The out might be that prostitution is not a private act but a business transaction.

When these laws were written, sodomy was illegal in most western nations.

Kp... my comment's intention was I wonder will "some" folks use this decision as a launching pad for other laws. For me there is no homosexual agenda. I personally don't care if someone is gay, black, purple, white, short, tall, etc. What consenting adults do in private sexually is their own business so far as I am concerned.<br><br><br><br>
In the decision however, this seems to have been the deciding factor... that if its a private thing between consenting adults, it's acceptable. So, I can see someone using this as an argument in a prostitution case.<br><br><br><br>
Tame, you make a good point, prostitution is indeed a business transaction and perhaps that might be the difference. I still think it'll be interesting to see just what types of cases, if any, this decision is referred to in future.
