Hey everyone.<br><br>
I have become very involved with my local humane shelter and recently gained a seat on their board of directors. I am doing my best to create some positive change.<br><br>
Last Thursday was a difficult day. We share facilities with animal control and they have a very high kill rate AND still use the gas chamber to do it.<br><br>
They put 4 dogs into gas for 30 minutes. When they went to remove the bodies, they discovered one dog was still alive. She was shaking uncontrollably and covered in all manner of gore from the dead dog above her.<br><br>
It is absolutely horrible that any of these animals are killed at all, but then to have it done in this way is just beyond disgusting.<br><br>
The dog was rushed to the vet and is doing great! We are using her story to gain notice from the public and hopefully pressure the county into ending the chambers use.<br><br><br><br>

I find it totally shocking that there are still shelters in the US that use gas. I used to think that was something that was done away with in the 50s and 60s.

I was pretty surprised when I found out they were still using gas too.<br><br><br><br>
I was there when they were gathering felines to kill and I managed to save a few kittens (now named Gidget, William Wallace and Billy Idol), but many more were killed - full litters included. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/sad.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=""><br><br>
It was heartbreaking enough knowing they were being killed, but I had it in my mind that they'd be using injection. I thought they'd just go to sleep.<br><br><br><br>
Several minutes later I was sitting in the shelter office speaking with the manager about some things I'd like to help the shelter improve on when I heard cats screaming. Everyones' eyes went to the floor and a moment later they were trying to offer eachother looks of comfort. I asked what was going on and that was when I found out that the chamber was still in use. Before going home that day, I swore to them that I would find a way to end it.<br><br>
I'm hoping that the story of Amazing Grace will fulfill my promise and put an end to it. We are also going to make sure the chamber is destroyed and not sold to a neighboring county.<br><br>
I think what is possibly most outrageous is that the chamber has only been in use since 2001. Before that they had a vet doing lethal injection at a very low price. It was the same vet that saved Amazing Grace and refused to give her back. The county chose cruelty!<br><br><br><br><br><br>

You're doing a great thing, Erin! Gas chamber "euthanasia" should be outlawed. Unless we're talking about gassing those responsible for choosing it over the vet giving injections.<br><br><br><br>

We have been flooded with calls and emails today about this. I have to stop people from yelling at me to try to explain that we are the ones trying to end the chamber. Every week we try to save as many animals from being killed as we have room for. We contact rescues, take who we can, etc to save those animals. Please understand it is not us.<br><br><br><br>
As much as I hate having people yelling at me and accusing me of animal torture (I'm a vegan by the way), I am also thrilled to know that it is getting this much exposure and that people are taking action to see this end. So a big thanks to everyone who gave me a hard time today because I know your heart is in the right place and I agree with you about how horrible the practice is.<br><br><br><br>

In addition to the gas chamber situation, I also have to take care of all of the other necessary things too - like getting dogs on Animal Control's Death Row rescued. I don't have the time to hesitate on getting those animals saved. In fact, the black dog in the news clip was killed via lethal injection by Animal Control this morning. He was a beautiful dog and perfectly healthy and it is heart breaking.<br><br><br><br>

yeah i know, did someone adopt him yet? really makes me want to get a doggie now after i move this month, im just not home much during the day time and he wouldnt get to go out until im home each day. I plan to build a big garage outside that will be heated and cooled though and ill build on a caged in area he/she can get into the warm/cool area during the day time when im away from the house so he can do his business<img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/yes.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":yes:">
