I had my first real slip yesterday since going vegan. I was out at a restaurant, really hung over from the night before (don't ask), and starving. The only real substantive meal they had that was veg*n was a gardenburger and fries, so I ordered it, even though I know that the original gardenburger patty isn't vegan. I didn't get cheese on it or anything, but I know the patty itself contains dairy.

I feel bad about it, but am not going to beat myself up. In 2.5 months this is really the first time I've intentionally eaten a non-vegan item. I guess it taught me that I'm still vulnerable to situations like that, and need to always make sure I'm prepared with good food options, and try to eat BEFORE I'm starving (and maybe not to drink so much the night before next time.
) I had to come tell you guys though.

Awww, we all have little slip ups. I had my first veggie one a week ago. My mum had accidentally bought a garlic sauce thinking it was a white wine sauce, and gave it to me cos she can't stand garlic. I just put it in the freezer. When i eventually fancied eating it, (i think she gave it to me in dec before i turned veggie) I just defrosted it and ate it with pasta. On having a bad stomach the next day I checked the ingredients i noticed it was made with chicken broth, and Ugh, chicken skin.
I was mortified and felt like throwing up, but I had to forgive myself because it was a genuine slip up, and my fault for not checking the label before I ate it.

thank you. I do feel bad, because this was a moment of weakness on my part and not simply something I didn't know. But like I said, I know better than to beat on myself about it.

Exactly, and it was your first slip up. You were not totally in control of your faculties as you had been drinking the night before, and this influenced your decision. I would just forgive yourself, move on and try not to repeat the situation again.

I accidentally ate something with cheese powder in yesterday... I didn't notice it a whole lot until I'd almost finished it, thought it was vegan cheese as all the other products in the range are vegan! Serves me right for not reading labels properly.

The important thing is doing what's right at any given moment. The right thing to do now is not dwell on it and get back to living the life you want :^)

I'll say the same thing I usually say to anyone who makes the choice to eat things that aren't vegan: Examine why you may or may not desire to be vegan. Move forward from there, follow through with choices that support that decision.

Thank you, this is very wise.

I think the best thing is to remember that even if you slip up or make a non-vegan choice, you always have ahead an abundance of future decisions, each of which you can make into a vegan choice if you so want.

Here's an idea to leave this on a positive note - maybe you could write to the restaurant (or leave a comment card if it is nearby) and let them know you're glad they have a vegetarian option, but they could reach a larger population if they switched to a vegan veggie burger (Gardenburger does have a few vegan varieties, as well as Boca or Amy's). This would cover vegans as well as lactose-intolerant and possibly milk allergic people. There might not be much of a chance that they'd take you up on it, but it's worth a try.

That's a great idea, thank you.

Bumping an old thread to make my own confession.

I was at a small, local festival and had consumed quite a large amount of (vegan) scrumpy. I was in desperate need of food to soak up the booze before attempting to get home. All of the food contained either meat, dairy, egg or all three! There wasn't even anyone selling chips fffs. So ......

I (knowingly) ate egg noodles
:(

I was constipated for almost a week! <----- Karma

So you've been living with the pain of the guilt AND the constipation? Tough break!

I'm afraid you will need to hand in your vegan card before you leave.

Let's look at the 'official' definition: possible and practical. You were in a tough situation. What sort of festival doesn't have chips?! The fact you knew there was egg in them means you were trying hard enough to ask everyone about the food.

But stay away from scrumpy! It's the devil...

Exactly! Well it was a small food and drink festival with some live music thrown in. I think they were under the impression it was too 'highbrow' for chips. :)

The food options were:

1) Bratwurst sausages/paprika pork chops.

2) Beef or pork burgers

3) Hog roast

4) Paella with seafood and chorizo

5) Ice cream

6) Pancakes/Crepes

7) Cakes

8) Thai noodles (but only with egg noodles) and curries (no veggie option, only meat)

The scrumpy was vile (but potent)
I don't actually remember getting home that night.

Next week I'm going to Munich for Oktoberfest. Really not looking forward to lack of options as Bavaria and Oktoberfest are famous for butter chicken, pork knuckle and fish on a stick. Just going to have to prepare and take my own food and hopefully find some place that sells chips and a falafal place.

Oh, having been vegetarian since childhood there are many disgusting ingredients I ate for years without realising. You're right though, dried chicken powder...I don't even want to think what that is. That' s not food!

Ah I see, so instead they went with that whole gastropub vibe, with a bit of chorizo thrown in because that's the in thing. That's such a bad menu for ALL dietary requirements that aren't summed up by the word 'anything.' I was about to say I remember my first scrumpy encounter well, but I sort of don't.

Good luck with that, hope you don't end up eating sauerkraut for days!

'Fish on a stick' sounds so very, very wrong. *boak*

I know you'll have done your own research, but have you seen this one?

Says near to Oktoberfest - I don't know what their definition of near is though...
