OK, I hope I'm not wrong thereby making myself seem like a messy hoarder, but I think most people have a "junk room". A place where we store things we aren't ready to part with but don't necessarily use anymore. I am cleaning mine OUT since I will be moving in a few months, I just can't see toting useless stuff. So! What would you guys do with:

Tons of books I've already read
Old cassette tapes of me singing as a teenager (I'm a singer, obviously)
Old VHS cassette of me as a teenager
( wouldn't I want to show my kids about their young mom one day?)

I would keep the books that I use as reference. I would pull out the ones that were worth at least $10/used and sell them on amazon. The rest would be donated to the local friends of the library so they could resell them and give the money to the library.

I would get the tapes digitized at some point so they are more accessible, but I would still keep the originals for their history. I have 3 bankers boxes filled with stuff I did as a kid.... sketchbooks, audiotapes of the band, old school workbooks, yearbooks, ticket stubs, report cards (reading the teacher comments is always good for a laugh). I don't think it takes up that much space, as long as it is organized like that, and it is fun to go through the actual artifacts now and then.

convert all the tapes to digital media so you can easily take them with you. if you don't want to keep the books see if your friends are interested, otherwise sell or donate them. i keep all my books though

I love the amazon idea. I came across a big box I haven't gone through in at least 10 years. It was full of old karaoke tapes andI other nonsense. Lol. TRASH

But what about my old obsolete text books I cant sell anymore? And an old Compaq laptop I am afraid to throw away because of info possibly stored on it?
If the books aren't worth anything, and the library wouldn't want them (they don't take textbooks at mine) there might be a place to recycle them, there is here.

I would sell or donate the books that I haven't used in a year.
The rest of it I would trash.

Good for you for clearing out your junk! It's so liberating. We just cleaned up our garage and made room to park both cars. It's so nice to be rid of the clutter. It makes everything you keep so much easier to use and enjoy.

What the library won't take should be given to Goodwill or the Salvation Army or the like. Call them and inquire about their policies.

Quote:

See if there is a local computer users group in your area. Maybe someone there can help you.

Yes! Freecycle.org is great in my area. They have it lots of places. You give stuff away to people who want it. Lots of people love old computers, and books!

If it was my stuff I would sell what I could sell and donate (or trash depending on condition) the rest.

I would definitely get rid of the books I didn't want! I like to take ours to the local used bookstore. They usually will give a (very very) small credit to use for new books, but Im always happy to support a local business - especially one that sells books! I don't know what I would do with the tapes, since I don't sing. If you dont think you need them or have any use for them, I would trash them. If you can't convert the VHS tapes to a digital format, definitely keep them anyway! You'll want them, or your kids will want them!

Good for you for cleaning out your junk room! I love the feeling of getting rid of junk, mainly because I'm kind of a neat freak and I hate clutter.
