so... (yes its been a while, was away over easter)..

just curious here and you guys always have interesting things to say

had a debate with a smoking friend over easter and she isn't one of those 'i know its bad, but i can't/don't want to quit' smokers. she's a french 'its really not that bad!' smoker.

i can't imagine smoking, personally. don't like it. but is there anyone around who genuinely feels that the threat of tobacco has been blown out of proportion? or that you're just as likely to die from something else? or that cigarettes in moderation for a few years are ok(she claims that the lungs will repair themselves when she quits after having children)?

am i really that closed minded??

Well, I've never been a smoker. I think it's bad. I do know some smokers who have lived well into their 70's, 80's...but dying from lung cancer or emphysema is a hell of a way to finally go. I have a cousin who smokes who is only 45 and she already has mild emphysema. I imagine it's like anything else...like back in the day, a lot of women smoked during pregnancy and still managed to have healthy babies. Sometimes you're lucky and it works out. I personally don't think it's worth the risk. If you (not you, you) don't smoke, don't start because I'm seeing a lot of family/friends trying to quit and it's really hard. I don't think the dangers are blown out of proportion.

Well there is a reason supposedly 95% of smokers start before 18. Because they are young enough to really believe that they will quit at point x in their lives and all will be well. Tell her to talk to people who have quit or are still trying.

It's true the lungs will repair themselves. I don't know if that totally reduces all risk of cancer, though. And it doesn't remove the damage to the circulatory system it's done. It damages arteries so that fats are more likely to stick and build up. Perhaps the fat can be reduced to some degree with super health living (think Ornish diet), but I don't know if the damage to the vessels totally reverses or not.

You will also not get back (afik) damage to the skin aka premature wrinkles.

Plus all the other nasty problems you get right now. Wouldn't she rather put all that money in the bank earning interest so when that baby does come, she can have a nice little bank account for it? And remind her to quit before she is pregnant, not after!!!

Smoked both pot and ciggarettes for about 5-6 years.

Had chronic bronchitis (never ending cough and when I would get a cold it would get REALLY bad) for half that time. Smoked with the flu once and my lungs filled with fluid (I was literally coughing up mouthfuls of fluid and blood and thought I was going to die). Gum infections that got so bad I almost lost my teeth. My entire body felt toxic, my skin was HORRIFIC. The acne I already have had was made at least 3x worse, horrible cystic infections that never would heal.

Since Ive quit smoking: Rarely get sick, when I do I get a sore throat and a cough that lasts 5-6 days at the most where it would last MONTHS before and never really go away. My acne has improved, I still get zits but they heal much better, and my skin has a better glow to it. Im still working on taking care of my gums but my mouth has lost much of that "rotting" smell it had before. The biggest improvement overall is definately noticing the difference when I get sick. This past winter was the first winter of my adult life I got through without having to spend half of it on antibiotics for bronchitis! I actually caught a cold, and got over it within a week, this has NEVER happened.

Now, I already had a weak system and lots of health problems to begin with, so some people can probably smoke without these types of things happening to them. But in a way Im glad because it gave me a reason to quit now (all this happened between age 20 and 24-Im currently almost 25) and be healthy. Some people who smoke and feel healthy now because you are young-please listen to my warning. It WILL catch up with you one way or another, sooner or later. Dont wait until its too late to take care of your health.

ehh... ill think about it later

no but in all honesty, i really am quitting. its just when i get on a health kick that i stop... and when i get into my ED and stress and ish i start again.... also it 'looks cool' and 'all my friends do it'...lol....

but recently have been thinking about all the animal testing tobacco industry does..... so i'm switching to cruelty-free cigarettes ..(american spirits dont test on animals)... pathetic i just need to quit!!

I smoked for 15 years and I can safely say that quitting was the hardest single thing I've ever done and by far the most rewarding thing I've done for my health.

My advice: If you smoke, quit. The sooner, the better.

If you don't smoke or are considering starting: don't do it.

My aunt died of lung cancer a few years ago and I could never understand why after seening her go through that for 4 years that other members of my family wouldn't want to quit.

Its true that some people who smoke live well into old age, and I think that a lot of smokers have the "it won't happen to me" attitude. Thats how my mom is. It's weird, smoking can have some many negative effects on person and little benefits but people still continue to do it... And from what I've heard quitting is NOT easy and the longer you wait to do it the harder it is...

My mom was a smoker, and she died of lung cancer at 49. My aunt in her mid-60's also just died the same way. It's a painful way to go.

Besides that, even without cancer, smoking diminishes your capacity to do physical exercise and increases your risk for almost every disease.

And it smells bad, harms the environment, and as someone else mentioned, many tobacco companies test on animals.

Roughly 50 percent of smokers will die of a smoking related illness (more from heart disease than lung cancer and emphysema combined). The average smoker smokes 17 cigarettes a day. Cancer risk does not asymptote to the same level as non-smokers with reducing cigarette consumption (at least with a lower cut-off of 1 cig/day).

Ex-smokers' statistical risk of contracting lung cancer matches that of non-smokers after 15 years (for the average ex-smoker).

Obviously, those who plan to quit "later" have no concept of what breaking a drug addiction entails.
