I was having dinner tonight with my family (I was eating a veggie stir-fry and they were having steak and potatoes topped with cheese) and my brother made the comment that if you have no cholesterol in your diet youll die. He seemed pretty sure of this. Id never heard this and was wondering if it was true?

Yup it's true.

Only a lot later than folks who eat the stuff. Your brother needs to educate himself about nutrition. The body produces its own cholesterol!

Vegans don't consume any cholesterol and live pretty well. Only animal products have cholesterol. It's just about the unhealthiest thing one can eat. It is directly linked to clogged arteries and heart disease.

And I'm pretty sure about this too!

Thanks Oatmeal and 46 avocados - I was sure he must be wrong because I knew about the vegan diet. However, I wasn't quite up to date on the information myself to have any sort of informed argument with him at the time.

Besides that, how could I possibly trust any nutritional information from a guy who consumes fast food five days a week and complains when there's no meat in his soup?

truth be told, the effect of cholesterol consumed directly is drawfed by the effects of saturated fat in one's diet and the way in which it triggers the endogenous synthesis of additional cholesterol. Luckily, veg diets (excluding cheesitarians) are typically low in sat. fat too.
