Dark chocolate is usually vegan, but check your labels.

I don't eat chocolate ... ever ... except when I indulge in Soy Dream's Chocolate Fudge Brownie ice cream, so I can't really say much. I'm not keen on candy bars.

Green & Black's, Rapunzel, and Endangered Species all have vegan options and are all fair trade, you can't beat that! But you'll probably only find them in health food stores or online. I don't really like chocolate, but those are great.

Unfortunately, you still have to check labels. Dove dark, for instance, is not vegan.

They sell those at our Whole Foods.

I always want to buy the Endangered Species ones just because the animals are so beautiful on the labels.

Hershey's dark chocolate is not vegan either! I like Rapunzel, Tropical Source, Newman's, Green & Black's. I'm sure there are other brands as well.

I have had the endangered species brand. It's pretty good.

Shop Rite sells their own brand of semi sweet chocolate chips that are vegan! Yay!

How ironic - I'm eating Rapunzel's right now.

Like others said, you'll have to read labels.

Depends what country you're in - in the UK they have this really annoying habit of sticking milk in most brands of dark chocolate. A few brands are ok though. Like others have said, read the labels. Green and Blacks specify which of their chocolate bars are suitable for vegans on the label.

also yeah the UK does weird things!! their dairy milk cadbury used to taste different i recall and thats because they had veg. oil and transfats and stuff in there whereas australia didn't. i always found that weird.

but to be honest..i liked the uk version better...

dark beats it all hands down though.

Can I ask a question along the same lines as the original poster? Is dark chocolate just an acquired taste? Honestly I went out and bought 4 BIG dark chocolate bars and all I can say is, eww, eww, ewww!!!

These are the 4 I bought: Lindt Excellence Dark Extra Fine,Ghirardelli Intense Dark Twilight Delight, Perugina Dark Chocolate, & then last but not least Green & Black's Organic Maya Gold Bittersweet Dark Chocolate with Orange & Spices (triple eww on this one!!!)

I can do vegan semi-sweet chocolate chips but dark chocolate is sooo bitter to me!! Is there something I can do with these 4 bars instead of just throwing them out? Any ideas on that would be appreciated!!!

Back to your regularly scheduled thread! Sorry to the original poster for the hijack!

You could mail them to me.

I would be more than happy to, but I've already taken bites out of each one!!! I tried each one in hopes that one would be a bit better than the one before, but no such luck on my part!

That's kinda why I was hoping for some recipes or something to be able to use them in instead of having to throw them out!

You could try chunking them up into little bits and baking them into cookies or brownies. The sweetness in the cookies should balance out the bitterness of the dark chocolate.

Thanks so much for the tips! That was the ONLY reason that I hadn't tried it before now, because I didn't want to spoil a perfectly good recipe with the bitterness from the chocolate, but I guess I'll give it a try!

Thanks so much,
