today i have come to the realization that i am not going to become a nurse practitioner. they're upping the requirement to doctorate in 2015, which means that i'd have to immediately get in school and go full time. i don't want to go 2 years without working and spending 50k on it. this means that i'll never make it, because i'd rather castrate myself than get a doctorate in nursing. i feel like i've just come to a fork in the road in my life .

anyone else, and what road did you take?

I haven't actually found my road in life yet. I'm still doing donuts in the parking lot of life.

that's an honorable pursuit, as long as they're vegan .

I have 4 close friends who are in ARNP programs right now because of the change in requirements. Have you considered the PA route? Another of my close friends just started that last fall and loves it.

I'm happy as a social worker, but I'm pretty sure that wouldn't meet your finanacial standards.

Good luck figuring it all out.

I changed my path too. I went from pursuing (ultimately) a masters degree in nutrition to pursuing one in art (painting).

Because hey, why make money and live comfortably when you can be a starving artist?

It kinda funked up my life because I had to transfer to a different school, which has completely different graduation requirements. But I'm doing what I love.

My advice is to ditch nursing and come live with my friends and I in an artist colony. Who knows, maybe you'll discover that you're a talented sculptor.

i'm trying my own thing with video production (educational/test prep software and various other production projects). this frees me up from worrying about returning to school, so i can pursue this till i determine that it's not worth pursuing. actually i'm really excitied to have creative time in my life. my expenses will be so minimal that i could just work 2 days a week in the float pool and be free to travel, etc.

i can assure you when it comes to art, while i can appreciate the greatness of many artists, i haven't a smidgen of talent. but good for you, if it's your dream, chase it down. you only live once.

Are you really going to let more schooling stop your dream job?

the problem with pa is that it's expensive and you'd have to quit work. and then you'd have to work under an MD. that wouldn't be bad for doing orhtopedic surgery, but i don't want to round for doctors in a hospital setting. if i have to go further in medical, i'd try nurse anesthetist.

i have to be honest and say that i don't believe in so many things i have to do in nursing. our whole approach to medicine is a big turn off for me.

I totally understand and respect that. If you aren't passionate about it, it isn't worth moving further down that path.

Dr. Esselstyn does not approve (and a frozen banana ice cream does NOT make).

I went to school to be a music teacher, but I realized about halfway through my student teaching experience that I was NOT cut out to be a band director. I then attended grad school and studied clarinet performance. I enjoying playing and took as many gigs as I could muster. Then I developed jaw problems and overuse injuries in my hands and wrists which put a serious crimp in my performance career. I ended up moving and now have a job as an insurance licensing specialist. My job pays the bills, but I recently discovered that I love to write so I have been taking writing classes to develop my skills. I also enjoy designing and making jewelry, reading, music, walking, surrounding myself with art and eating good food I am trying to find a different musical instrument to play so I can get back into my first love.

I work full time, skipped college, live with relatives, have money saved up for retirement and do animal activism in my spare time. I love my life and wouldn't change anything about it.

reinvention is the key to happiness. may we all continually reinvent ourselves in ever happier ways . for me, the door to nurse practitioner closing has taken a big load off my shoulders. now i only think of working one more hard traveling contract to have the money and time to pursue happiness.

i've definitely decided to become an anesthesia assistant if i have to stay in health care. it's essentially the PA version of nurse anesthetist, and you go to a real medical school instead of a nursing school to do it. i can't deal with those crazy women who run nursing schools. it's the same level of license as nurse anesthetist.

i've just had it what i'm doing anymore, getting run this hard at night with 4 to 6 people and all the whining and bitching. if you're in anesthesia, you get one patient, and you knock their ass out every time! what could be better? no bitching, no families - and they are only in your care for a short period. the hours are basically day hours, and the money is fabulous. easy 10k a month take home working 4 days a week.

if my biz doesn't take off in the first year, i'm definitely headed back to school! 27 months and 70k - really not a bad deal at all.
