Okay, last winter I missed out on a great opportunity to go to China for a winter-session "study abroad" program. Well, this winter I am going to just die if I can't go to this one:

[snip]

Winter 2004

London HESC

HESC367 - Principles of Coaching Soccer (3 cr.)

This course is designed to help students learn the basic concepts and methods of coaching soccer to youths and adults.

SOCI204 - Urban Communities (3 cr.)

Urbanization, rural-urban social differences and the organization of urban communities by race, class, ethnicity and stage in the life cycle.

Study the principles of coaching soccer and learn more about urban communities in London, a city renowned for both its social differences and its soccer (or as the Brits say football) prowess. Students will have the chance to attend an English Premier League match, a 1st Division match and one other professional match. There will also be the opportunity to play a couple of friendlies against some local clubs. In London, youll interact with players and coaches from various teams as you study the offensive and defensive tactics, styles of play and coaching strategies utilized by these experts.

[/snip]

OH MY GOD!!! WHAT?!?!?!?! Well, of course, it costs $3800 and includes only "some meals and entertainment". I have family near London, too, so it would just be smashing to go!!!

WhEre CAn i GET THirTy-eIGHt BenJ1MaNs?!?!?!

Max.. I've been saving up for a down payment on a house lately, and this is what I would recommend. Even though it doesn't sound like much it really adds up.

Recycle all your cans, glass and plastic bottles.

Don't spend change! Put it all in a jar.

Use coupons and buy store brand when shopping.

Donate sperm.. MissLeigh had a good idea.

Good luck!

What is your deadline for paying? Keep us posted.

Oh yeah.. I forgot to mention that you can guilt your friends & family into recycling for the good of the planet, and 'do them a favor' by taking it all to be recycled for them. Of course you don't have to mention that you got paid for it... hehe

Huh... isn't it mandatory these days for people to recycle? We have to do it here... heck.. they won't even collect our garbage if it isn't separated, and the recyclables placed in those clear/blue recycling bags.

For those who wish to bring it directly to the recycling depots, they get money for their plastics, bottles, etc. If they choose to use the garbage truck pickup system, they get no money for their recycleables.. though they still must separate the garbage before it is collected.

DAMMIT!!! I've never lived in a pay-for-recycling state before now, and I'm, SO not used to doing the bottle-return thing. DAMMIT! DAMMIT! DAMMIT! I EASILY recycled 50 bottles today!!!

First stop: eBay. Ohhh... I'm so out of gear to sell that isn't near to my heart! As for the sperm thing, well, one time in college (the first college) a bunch of us went through the process. You have no idea how selective they are! We were all "politely not requested" after doing the physical. We got 50 bucks for it. Now, after the... uhh... "stuff" I've done, they'll probably pay me 50 cent to leave them alone...

As for change, I am quite good at this, actually. I use quarters for coffee-money and everything else goes into a jar and to the coinstar at the supermarket every couple of months. Speaking of grocery stores... Who was it that was on a $15/week food budget? Heh. Looks like I'll be on a $10/week budget (my old man sends me $20 every paycheck).

There are scholarships available, which I'll apply for, but I won't bank on those. I can extend my student loan, but I'll need my old man's co-signing on that. Still, I'm going to buckle down and see what I can save between now and October 2 (deadline)...

I'll be posting updates here, if only to keep myself focused!

i'm trying to figure out ways to make extra cash on the side. if i come up with anything i'll let you know.

hey, are you really super good in any subjects? you could charge to tutor students who need help in those subjects. even if you just say "buy me lunch and i'll help you study" you'd save money you'd have used on lunch. every bit helps right? and most people would consider that a reasonable exchange.

if you have other skills you could use or teach, post ads on the school bulletins. loan yourself out to create websites for people.

or have your own little fundraiser, or organize one with other students in your program who want to go on the trip also. a bachelor auction would be fun and might get you some tail

(did i just say that? )

lol

a friend's sister was supposed to go to school for a year in London. she had a not so good time. she was jumped walking home one night and basically escaped only because she screamed like a banshie and scratched the guy's face with her car key. she flew home the same week and never went back, she was only there for a couple weeks i think. biiiiiig waste of money.

and yet her sister had her apartment robbed in a small town here in Canada so i don't see how fleeing the country is supposed to help her avoid violence at all. it happens everywhere

anyway i hope you're able to go, it sounds like it'd be tons of fun

You could definitely swing that.

I would suggest going to local organizations in your town. I don't know what you have, but we have a Lion's Club, Elk's Club....and other club's. I have a friend that got his trip paid for...He went to Africa and all around Europe completely for free. He simply went into this organization, and because he is local, they wanted to help him. You could also try going to local newspapers, preferrably non-profit and trade in a great article about your experience there for thier financial contribution. You'd be surprised how many local people are willing to help you b/c it "looks" good. Even going to local businesses. I don't know your major, (isn't it psychology/philosophy?), but if you went into some local offices and volunteered your time/skills for a financial donation you could gain some loot there! Look everywhere, and don't be afraid to ask for handouts. Hope this helped somewhat.

So far here are my ideas:

Borrow money via a student loan (borrrrringgggg)

Sell the rights to legally change my name on eBay (see: goveg.com)

Work really hard (BWAHAHAHAHA!!!! Get it?!?!?! Funny stuff...)

And that's all I've come up with. I might not apply after all. I'm graduating this year. If I really want to spend time in England, I could just GO there. Sure, it'd be nice to go there for school with other students, but it'd also be nice to get into a nice graduate school (like Kings College in London?) which is what my focus should probably be on...

bah. the studying abroad thing looks good on your transcripts. seriously, see if other students are willing to do a fundraiser at school. i'm sure you're not the only one not able to afford the trip. like jilhrt said, companies will be willing to help you for the publicity. see if you can find someone to donate a really wicked prize and raffle it off. sell tickets for a couple bucks each and split the earnings among the other students who participate.

companies donate things all the time for stuff like this. back in highschool we used to have a yearly "penny sale" at christmas. students and teachers would bug people they know to donate things from their company, and the whole school would buy tickets. there'd be stuff like gift certificates for restaurants, oakley sunglasses, rollerblades, cd's and video games, etc. we always made thousands of dollars and donated it all to a local charity to buy xmas gifts for poor kids. all we had to do was mention which company donated which prize. free publicity for them, free money for you.

donating blood plasma is a good idea

i know someone who does it, i think he gets like 30 bucks for 2 sessions and thats like once or twice a month

heh, if you look in those employment guides a lot of the time they have ones that say 'donate blood plasma'

heh, i used to be friends with someone who would buy "prada" ****, among others, on the street (or off the back of a truck) in NYC... then she would sell it on ebay

she made so much damn money... like a couple thousand a month

hehe, i dont know how morally opposed you would be to that, its just an idea

she never got in trouble either... i dont even think her stuff was fakes... i think it was just all stolen... who knows really

anyway

g'luck
