Layne Staley-lead singer for Alice in Chains. His music is incredible. We'll never hear a voice like his again. You can just feel his pain in his singing. I felt very very sad for him that he couldn't beat his addiction. He died a lonely, troubled soul. No one deserves to go out like that. I'm reminded of how emotional he was whenever I hear listen to my old AIC's CD's or listen to the Mad Season CD.

edited to add: In case you don't know, he O.D'd on heroin and cocaine in April 2002. He was only 34 years old.

Princess Diana's death bothered me too. The way she died was so violent. I never knew she did so much trying to help children around the world until after her death. And so beautiful too. The world lost a great lady when she passed on.

The Pixies. They didn't really die; when they split up it was called their "death" (thus the albums Death to the Pixies (a "best of") and Pixies f**king die (a tribute of covers)).

Then there's Michael Hutchence, Kurt Cobain, Sir Alec Guiness and George Harrison.

And when Princess Diana died I was amazed at the world reaction (so that had an effect).

I can't recall any others, so I guess they didn't really have that much effect.

George Harrison.

The day they announced his death, at least 5 people at work came up to me all serious and offered their condolences, as if he was a close personal friend or something.

It was very, very sad--I kind of thought of George as indestructible after everything he'd already gone through.

I was also very saddened by Joe Strummer's death, but the thing that bothered me the most about that was that everyone automatically assumed it was b/c of drugs.

yes thank you. that one hit my boyfriend pretty hard, he was one of his favourite actors/comedians. and the whole thing behind his death was just sad and so unexpected. it's like the SNL curse or something

Yes, Phil Hartman, Michael Hutchence, George Harrison, but I think Princess Diana was so sudden and sad and shocking.

She had just finalized her divorce and was restarting her life. I just couldn't believe it. Although I don't remember since I was little, John Lennon, just the fact that he died so young has always struck me as such a tragedy.

Sonny Bono was sad and sudden. He was a nice guy from what I was able to tell. And Paul Wellstone. Very unfortunate.

There are others I am sure if I think about it.

I'm pretty bummed about Nina Simone's recent passing. What an amazing activist and singer.

Kurt Cobain was the biggest for me. I always had this platonic crush on him. I don't really know what else to say about it.

Lennon is the other one. I was only 7 and there was no way I could have appreciated the impact of his death. I remember seeing it on the news and crying. I just knew deep down that we all lost something that day.

There's more, but it takes time to remember these things.

That's one I couldn't think of (although for some reason Harrison Ford kept coming into my mind, so I think I was trying to relate to RP by Mosquito Coast and Indiana Jones).

Not that I've put too much thought into this but I always thought he looked best in the Heart Shaped Box video, there's this scene at the end where he's rocking back and forth on the bed and he kind of grits his teeth. And on Unplugged. I'll shut up now.

And I had that same avatar for a while but mine was black with a yellow smilie.
