We found a caterpillar and want to try to keep him/her alive.

But we found out that caterpillars are very particular about what they eat, so we need to try to identify this little one.

Can someone please help!

Thanks for trying to help!

I had found that link already, but can't find our caterpillar there.

Unless I'm not looking well enough...

This probably isn't much help, but what plants were growing near where you found her? You might be able to collect samples of the vegetation there and offer them, finding out what she eats that way.

Then again- unless you're in the southern hemisphere, the caterpillar might be getting ready to pupate.

I just went to the tree where my daughter had found him and took a branch with the leaves and berries.

He's still alive! I hope he's going to eat something!

Why are you keeping it? Is it injured or something?

That's what I was wondering (I'm assuming it has to do with your daughter). All of the bugs I tried to keep as a kid were dead by the next day. I think the tree where you found it is probably the best place for it.

I'm keeping him because it's freezing cold outside.

We're already keeping a ladybug who's doing really well!

You could check here: http://bugguide.net/node/view/57/bgimage

That's where I'm looking right now.

ETA: I like that site, also, because you can send in an image so others can identify it for you.

a ladybug? aren't they supposed to hibernate?

and the caterpillar, what are you going to do when it starts to change into what it's supposed to be? (either a moth or a butterfly)

The caterpillar didn't make it. He was already barely alive when my daughter found him.

The ladybug was flying in our house.

When they get into your house, they will fly around until they either dry out or die in a lamp.

We're going to try to keep this little one alive until spring!

So far so good!
