So this a qeustion that i really should already know the answer to but here it goes. I know hat they are both milk derived but are whey and casien vegetarian? And sodium caseinate. I saw that there was already a thread about that on here and it just kind of confused me and i didnt get the answers i wanted. And ive looked on the internet and it really wasnt helpful.

I am confused as well. I came across non dairy cheese, but it had Casein in it. Also, it is my understanding that Whey is lactose?

Those cheese are vegetarian but not vegan. The soy cheeses at Trader Joe's all have casein in them. I'm not sure I understand the point of the product, other than to be lactose free.

But is casien vegetarian. I thought i read somewhere that it has something to do with rennant... But i dont know

Whey is basically the other half when casein is removed from milk, like when vinegar is added the white chunks are casein and the clear liquid is whey. The old nursery rhyme about 'curds and whey', that was clotted milk- like wattery cottage cheese.<br><br>
ocrob is right to be confused, nearly all 'non-dairy' creamers are made from milk. I think they can call anything 'non-dairy' so long as the lactose intolerant wont get sick from it.

But just so were clear here do they use rennant to get whey or casien? Like is that what they seperate it with? I read somewhere about rennant being involved in the process.

This is the way I understand it as well. I believe casein and whey are created during the same step in which rennet is introduced in the cheesemaking process. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong.<br><br>
Now whether or not rennet, whey, or casein are vegetarian could be the subject of great debate, but in my opinion, they should all share the same classification.
