I have heard that you can start your own potatoes and carrots growing from what you all ready have? Has anyone done this and can tell me how? Can you do the same thing with celery? Is there anything else around the house you can do this with (fruit/veggie?)

Thanks!

If you plant a piece of potato that has at least one eye, it can develop into a potato plant, yes- although I've never done it myself.

Carrots, I don't know... when my sisters and I were kids, when we had fresh carrots for dinner, we sometimes used to put a carrot top onto a saucer with water, cut side down, and the top would start growing leaves. But I don't think you can propogate or grow a whole carrot this way.

I love celery and would like to grow it but I heard it needs a wet muck soil, which I don't have.

Did you want to grow something edible, or just have a different kind of house plant? Avocado pits are supposed to make nice house plants, but they might make a pet sick if the animal chewed on it; I'm not sure. Sweet potato will start growing if you set it up so that the bottom end is in water. And I've cut the tops off of pineapples, rooted them, and gotten (very prickly) houseplants. Citrus seeds can sprout into a nice foliage plant but they're not easy to grow.

I'm just trying to find ways of maybe starting veggies/fruits from what I have at home. I've grown/am growing tomatoes, beans, peas, blueberries, strawberries and peppers. I've also ordered a little orange and lemon trees. Thinking of getting an avocado tree. Just trying to supplement and do at home more than buy the things we eat the most. If I could plant fruit trees here I would, but that's a no-no in base housing. my daughter loves grapes, but I'm not sure how hard they are to grow.

I guess any suggestions as far as that goes (what to grow from what I have or can easily get). The only thing I am not willing to try is lettuce. I am just so unsure of that.

I do have tons of houseplants allready..and love 'em!

Thanks!

Oh, my oldest loves sweet potatoes..does that make a plant or actually grow a veggie?
