One of my dogs is 16. For a couple of years her backside has been getting weaker and weaker. Two mornings ago when we got up for breakfast she couldn't get her back legs to work. I fed her and took her outside and held her up so she could do her business. She was depressed, I was depressed, etc.. I decided that day that I wasn't giving up so, on the way home I stopped by home depot and bought two small lawnmower wheels, two 3/8 inch bolts with lock nuts, 10 feet of 1/2 PVC, some various angle elbows and the two part glue. I went home and built a canine wheel chair. I used an old towel for the "seat" and a free Purina dog collar that was too big for my dogs and made an awesome little wheel chair.

I put her in it for breakfast this morning and she was her old self. Happy as a clam and getting around enough to do what she needs to do. I still have to help her potty but, the wheel chair is working our far better than I imagined. Her whole demeanor changed when I put her in that thing and she could get around.

Who knew?

By the way. She is a wonderful, sweet, smart, loving little rescue dog. She thinks I hung the moon. I'll post some pictures when I get home. This G3 air card connection is too slow.

I took these with my phone camera. They aren't the best pictures but, you get the idea. The dog in the frankenchair is Harmony. The dog getting her face licked is Mady.

Harmony has been my best pal for ten years. Her previous owners abused her and abandoned her. They wouldn't give her water so, she had a ragin urinary tract infection when I got her. She was peeing blood and she wouldn't drink water unless I stood there with her. A trip to the vet and some meds fixed that. Over the years she has grown out of that fear. Harmony sleeps next to my pillow every night. She's getting old and I know the dreaded day is coming. I can't imagine what my life will be like without her beautiful spirit as a part of it. As I type this she is laying on the chair next to me lightly snoring.

Mady, the dog getting her face licked came to our house after her people died. She lived with an old couple that died within a couple of months of each other. In foster care she suffered an eye wound. When we got her she was depressed, confused and had the eye injury. She wore one of those cones and slept in the bed with me. Every two hours I had to put drops or cream in her eyes. I would set my clock and for a week I would put drops in her eyes every two hours. She is completely healed but, partially blind in that eye. She can give you a look that will melt you right where you stand. She has rejection issues and needs to be pulled aside and given individual love regularly. She just blossoms when she gets hugged and loved on.

Oh, about the frankenchair. It's not much to look at but, works surprisingly well.

Somewhere someone said they liked black pugs. Here's my boy Sampson. He is trying to nap. He is the sweetest male dog on planet earth.

Here's Harmony, Mady and Sebastian.

Sebastian is the one on the right of the picture. He was owned by someone who wanted to show him but, his testicles didn't drop, he had major surgery, and couldn't be shown. The previous owner didn't want him so, we took him in. He is a cuddler. He is smart but, strong willed. He can manipulate like nobodies business.

What a great thing! I am a huge Dachshund lover, and they are prone to paralysis. I've seen some in little wheelchairs, whipping around. :) I bet a Dachshund rescue in your area could use your skilz...

Well, I looked at pictures on the web and I needed to build one before bed time so, I built a rigid frame with wheels. I built it tall enough to let her put some pressure on her back feet if she could but, to allow her mobility if her back legs weren't going to be doing anything (which is where we are with this thing). I then took an old towel and hung it in the frame and connected it with screws and electrical ties. I sort of hung the towel like a hammock and cut out holes for each leg and her tail. I set it up to support her without risking any circulation getting cut off. I attached the free collar to put over her shoulders. So, the shoulder strap causes her to pull up on the front of the cart and puts the weight of her hips and legs over the wheels. I have discovered that she needs and prefers the wheel chair to eat. If I try to sit her on a fleece in the floor to eat she has trouble eating. But, when I put her in the wheel chair she eats just like she always did and she can get to the water bowl on her own.

The down side is that she occasionally catches a wheel on something and gets stopped. But, she likes the wheel chair. It gives her some freedom to move about. I still have to help her go outside and do her business. But, she seems happy. She likes the extra attention she necessarily gets every day. We try to make sure she gets to the water bowl and out side throughout the day.

I know she is old and that I wont have a lot more time with her. Thankfully we have an RV so, when we have to go places we can take the dogs with us. They travel pretty well.

I have to admit that I love this old dog. My wife brought her home after we had an old dog die. I was beside myself and not ready for another dog. So, my wife brings home this abandoned mongrel who has been locked in a bathroom her whole life and starved for water. I always went to bed first because I had to get up early. So, I took this old dog to bed with me. She didn't know how to act. She curled up against my wife's pillow and I could see her staring at me. She and I became best friends. That was almost ten years ago. Now, if she is on the sofa and I sit down in my chair and a half she starts whining till I bring her to sit with me. She has slept between our pillows or at my feet for the last ten years. Most nights she sleeps with her head on my pillow next to mine. When she dies it will leave a big hole in my life. I hate to sound corny but, I value every day.

Wow, that's a really creative and much cheaper solution! That's good that she's doing better with it. By the way, one of my dogs was undescended and had to have a special surgery, too. The previous owner never mentioned it and said she was giving him away for a different reason, but since she bought him from a puppy mill pet store, and we later found vet papers saying that the vet did tell her about his condition shortly before she gave him away, we think that she gave him away since she couldn't show him, too. That's sad that the previous owners abandoned your dog. I don't know how anyone could do that to a dog, especially a Pug, they have so much character and they're like little babies, they really rely on us. Plus, they're our best friends, so I don't know how someone could do that to something that is like their child and their friend.

UPDATE: I wanted you folks to know that my sweet old dog is walking on her own again. She used the wheel chair for a few weeks and then started walking on her own again. Yea, her back legs are wobbly but, she comes and goes as she pleases without the wheel chair.

When she couldn't walk she got so depressed. In the wheel chair she got pretty happy. Now she's pretty much back to being her old self again.

I love my sweet old dog.
