That's right. I said Amazon.com, not Amazon.ca

Here is the information from http://www.tvshowsondvd.com

For some reason I wasn't able to highlight the text in order to copy and paste, so I can only post the link. http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=6697

I noticed this when I was living overseas and wanting to order. I had been scared of amazon.com for years because of the exhcange rate issue, but when I actually compared, I found it was cheaper. Amazon.com is one of the biggest retailers in the world and often they can offer huge discounts, so much that the list price will be significantly lower. Even when you factor in exchange rate, it can work out much cheaper. I order from amazon.COM all the time now that I am back in Canada, and they have great customer service too.

But what about duty? There are always a ton of things on Amazon.COM that I want, but I don't purchase them because I don't want to be stuck paying a ton of duty.

ETA: I just read the article and saw that items are shipped from Canada. Interesting...unfortunately, a lot of things that I want from the .COM site are things that aren't available on the .CA site, so they would probably still ship from the States.

I figured this one out some time ago.

I've ordered tons of stuff from Amazon.com over the years because, on the majority of things, their shipping fees are usually less than the 14% taxes (until recently it was 15%) I'd have to pay on an Amazon.ca order (even if I got free shipping from .ca).

I have never once had to pay customs fees on anything from them.

Amazon.co.uk, OTOH, is a virtual guarantee that I'll get hit with customs fees, although the odd thing does sneak through. Damn my insatiable penchant for British comedy.

Amazon.com always comes from the States regardless of where your order originates, but they won't ship certain things (like some toys) to Canadian addresses.

Amazon.ca always ships from Canada. Somewhere in Mississauga, ON I think. They have their own inventory.

All the various Amazons ship items from their native country.

I order from amazon.ca all the time, so I know how that works.

The reason I asked that question is because the comment on the link stated that the reason canadians are not charged duties etc. when ordering dvds from amazon.com is because they're shipped from within Canada.

As Ms. Bunnicula said:

Quote:

I always expected that orders from amazon.com were NOT shipped from within Canada, so that commeht surprised me.

If they're just shipped from the US, then I won't chance it on the duties etc.

I've spent hundreds if not thousands on Amazon.com over the last nine or ten years (we're talking probably 75 or more shipments) and I have never once had to pay customs fees. Which is crazy, 'cos when people send me things marked as gifts from the US I have to pay customs all the time.

Oh, and I have never once had something ordered from .com shipped from Canada. So that comment strikes me as odd too.
