I love feather earrings; I think they're beautiful, but there's nothing beautiful about birds being bred and killed for their feathers. I have three pairs purchased from Forever 21 and the thought of birds being bred and killed for them didn't even cross my mind until a few days ago when I looked it up.

I see people on Etsy selling feather earrings advertised as cruelty-free, like they took them from pet birds that feathers have fallen off of. Is this considered okay? It kind of uses the same logic as a dead whale washed up on a beach and saying "well, we might as well eat it" so that thought process makes me hesitant about wearing them.

So, is there anything wrong about wearing cruely-free feather earrings? For example, here's a listing for cruelty-free earrings-

http://www.etsy.com/listing/78229174...facet=handmade

Well, it's good they are cruelty free. The only issue is wearing them makes other people want them, and they are likely to not go for cruelty free earrings thus adding to the problem.

Yeah, I was actually thinking about that too- how people might "like" my earrings and want to buy their own.
This is like a never ending war Sometimes I just think, why can't people just stop breeding animals and free them all once the population goes down?! It'd save so many problems in the world and people would realize they don't "NEED" animal products.

Well, I guess the problem there is that you can have shoes/jackets etcs not made from any animal matter and other people may like the way it looks at get leather jackets, boots that look similar etc... so can't really win them all

Also its a bit creepy. Itd be the same as wearing dog hair earrings or human hair or something.

http://www.etsy.com/listing/57003622...facet=handmade
these style earrings are stunning, and have a feather-ish look without being a feather. I believe that's why many say that if you wish to reduce the desire for animal skin/ feathers as clothing then it's best to avoid wearing clothing that is made to resemble these things. So true that you can't win them all... just do as much as you reasonably can.

Oh my! I really love the threaded earrings and I find them far more beautiful than the feathers.

Oh my gosh, those are so pretty! I might have to buy those
But then another side of me thinks, why can't we increase the demand for faux fur, synthetic feathers, etc.? Not buying them at all won't increase the demand for fake ones, and will keep the demand for real ones higher. On the other hand, however, people might then view real ones as more valuable and make it a statement :S ugh.

And therein lies the problem. It pretty much is already seen that way... look at furs, for example.

Ugh. Furs disgust me. And those stupid UGG boots too that 95% of the female population has D: They're not even CUTE. And they all brag about how it's all "real" ?!?!? Disgusting. Sorry this is turning into a rant but I just can't stand some people >.>

Ugh... I know what you mean. I cheered inside when my nieces (8 and 9 years old, by the way) were complaining because they couldn't wear any UGG-style boots to school because they were banned.

Why did their school ban UGG boots? That's AWESOME though, and I'd be jumping for joy if that happened.

I do hate to admit that I had a pair of knock offs once, but I think they were real. This was a couple of years ago and I wasn't informed at all about any of this stuff. I feel rather ashamed that I owned a pair :/ I wore them like... 4 times lol I felt like a stuck up prep in them so I didn't want to wear them that often.

I think it was a safety issue... a combination of girls getting hurt by other girls for them and girls who kept tripping because they couldn't walk properly in them. I've never worn a pair because they just aren't my style, so I'm not sure what's so complicated about walking in them. LOL

I had a vegan ugg like boot a few years ago and the bottoms are very slippery especially when they are wet.

being cruelty free doesn't have much to do with it because it doesn't change the fact that feathers come from an animal.
feathers are an animal product, wearing feathers is not vegan.

I read a great blog post about feather earrings/extensions that might kill your desire for them:
http://www.thediscerningbrute.com/20...ir-extentions/

it also important to note that these birds are killed for their feathers.
I wouldn't hold it against you if you used a feather you found outside, but I wouldn't trust people on etsy calling something cruelty free when they probably don't know the half of it's meaning.

I picked up shed duck feathers near a pond and made a hanging mobile from them. However, it's more easy to explain the source for a piece of art in your home...

I am not vegan and would not wear feather earrings b/c it only supports the style, and most of the earrings sold are not cruelty free. And, omg, Uggs being animal based did not cross my mind. I feel so dumb. I just don't think of them as being leather and sheep b/c they are so soft like fabric. I am devoted to not buying any more animal skin/fur, etc... No more Uggs for us.
