An overweight koala is stupid enough that the complexity of its neurons is outweighed by the per pound corpse-meat it would provide - because, apparently, the cuter an animal is, the dumber it is.

I thought the punchline would be about humans, to be honest.

Also, SMBC makes the fallacy of saying that ranching kills less animals when in order to feed those animals (at least to the degree it would require to feed all humans), you have to cultivate plants.

I have no idea either, it seems like a stupid comic, or one that is so intelligent based that i don't get it lol, either way seems boring.

hmmm

so does it also say that veg*ns don't care about animals like worms because they are less cute than lets say cows (or fat coalas)?

No explaination necessary. It's stupid and the fact that is overlooks the obvious makes it totally unfunny. Stupid is only funny when it doesn't say the obvious and then ignore it. Like how ranching also entails plant cultivation doubling the "neuron" killed.

Not exactly, it's saying that we care less about roundworms because they are less neurologically complex. But suffice to say, the comic is more or less attacking a strawveg*n.

i was just wondering because it was posted by a friend of mine on facebook. she was a huge vegan, always posting some articals on how unethical it is to eat meat etc. and then one day she went back. i am not sure why, i remember last thing i saw her posting on the topic was about that blog of the ex vegan who suddenly realiuzed how important meat is to her health and started talking about how great bacon is. after that i just knew she became omni again. i didn't know why, just saw her eating meat. i was kiind of sad, she is a great person and it is her chgoice but it always feels sad when someone who was already on the "right side" goes back. so i wanted to see if this comic she posted explains it a bit, lol

I know the one you're talking about, the ex-vegan blogger. Her reasons were mainly health, with a side of The Vegetarian Myth (I can't recall who wrote it right now). I haven't read that book so I can't say if that the comic was inspired by it, but even if it was, it's pretty fallacious. Plus, not very funny. I think the best punchline would have been about humans being the most neuron-to-meat efficient but that's just me.

Well the comic got off into a stupid tangent... but I think the point is land cultivation/farming is bad for native species. A lot of habitat and thus animals are destroyed by farming. The more humans that inhabit this planet mean less animals that can inhabit it. All we can do is mitigate our damage and destruction of other species.

Me too. I like SMBC in general, actually... usually, webcomics aren't the best source of well-reasoned arguments :p

I laughed at it. The point was taking a simple as hell thing and falling down the rabbit hole of over complexity. We all do it. We take something and totally screw it up by making it complicated. A good answer is always: "I'm a vegetarian because nun-ya-f'n-business".

I have done vegetable gardening before and there was no animal killing. So I dont know what they were talking about frankly....

I didn't think it was funny. I looked through some of his other comics and didn't think they were funny either.

I agree that the punchline should have had something to do with humans.

Smbc is funny when he sticks to making scientist jokes. When he goes off on things like vegetarianism or feminism, not so much.

I agree. It is rather obvious that he doesn't know much about either subject.
