Planned to go for a nice picture taking hike today, but it is really cold and rainy. I do have to pack some more tonight so that will be a substitute workout. Hopefully (fingers crossed) it will be warmer tomorrow and I can go outside and do something. I hate being all cooped up in my apartment.

That's too bad your hiking plans didn't work out, kraftykraft. It sounded like it would have been fun.

Today:

We bought a new weightraining thing (they have them in gyms not sure what they are called. You can pull down the bar with weights on them, do leg workouts using the machine/weights attached, etc.) It's pretty dandy!

I did:

30min on the new weight machine (as talked about above), I could only use the 5 pound one, the next step up is 15. My legs/arms are so weak and skinny it's pathetic. My little sister could do more weights than me! But, I will gradually add on.

30 mins on treadmill

leg/arm warmups

30 min walk around subdivison

and maybe a video a little later.

plus, I was running around all morning for 6hours @ my job--non stop!

I have a question.

A couple years ago in health claas, our teacher told us that we should never workout for more than an hour a day. That it does something to your heart or something if you go over that limit--and it becomes unhealthy. Is this true? I love workingout. And most of the time, I usually stay between 1-1.5 hours a day. Plus, the stuff I do isn't really stressful on my body, it's not a stremendous workout. What do you guys think about this?

I bought those new running shoes today. Then I ran 6 miles with energy left over. Is it the shoes or is it the day off I had yesterday? hmmm.....

McgrawFan, I'm not sure about that. Theres all kinds of theories out there about what the ideal amount of working out is. I've even heard that over 45min isn't good for you because supposedly after that amount of time you are not burning anymore fat, you are burning muscle. I dunno though. My workouts often take me over an hour. I'm not sure what to beleive.

McgrawFan, as you work out more, be sure you eating to support yourself and give you energy, ok? Or I will have to borrow the bonker from Krista.

I've generally heard that there is no need to do more than one hour of cardio, but I think that a combination of weight lifting and cardio that goes over an hour is ok. If you really want to know, I could ask the personal trainer where I work...I will try remember! PM me if I don't get back to you on it.

Went swing dancing last night....around 3 hours of dancing total. Lots of fast songs and jumps and stuff! Yay!

As for the only one-hour per day of workout thing....it sounds fishy, but I really dunno.

I wanna be a hamster!! I wanna be a HAMSTER!! Can I join??

Ok- here's the thing with me: I'm only 24, and I look like I should be fit - but I'm not freakin' fit at freakin' all.

I've been trying for about 6 months to really get into a healthy/exercisey mode- but it's been tough finding things that fit with my lifestyle, and that I'll stick to.

(For example, I found a great gym I really liked, but for me the fees were just a bit much, even at student rates, and it was a 40 minute drive from home, which makes it hard to just 'fit it in'... so in short time I stopped going.)

But, after trial and error. I've discovered a plan I think is really working for me. It has 4 elements:

1- Creating a fit lifestyle! (i.e. making sure I exercise regularly, and keep my total health in mind at all times: this includes eating well, and the mental elements like taking time for myself when I feel stressed out...)

2- Maintaining motivation! (i.e.: allowing myself to feel proud of personal bests, keeping up my sticker chart (), exercising regularly so I feel the benefits of the increased energy and self confidence it gives me.)

3- Yoga yoga yoga! (I'm a beginner at all this, so I'm using a video at home for a while, till I really get into the HABIT of exercising. Once I can do that, THEN it's time for expensive gyms and classes. Also, I figure if you can't do the exercises your own body creates for you FIRST, you shouldn't be moving on to weights, etc...)

4- Cardio cardio cardio! (I'm really mainly trying to learn to run, but also I go rollerblading, biking, etc! I really suck at it so far, but Trevor's mother is in her mid fifties and is in unbelievable shape- mainly because she is a kickass, marathon level runner. I figure if she can do it, I bloody well can too. It'll just take me some time to work up to it!)

SO- for now I'm working mostly on getting into the exercise habit, staying motivated and personal bests.

My most brilliant idea so far was the use of a sticker chart (as per above), just like little kids- lol!

Every time I do yoga, I get a sticker in the yoga column, and everytime I run or do cardio, I get a sticker in that column! 4 of each in a week= 1 big happy face sticker!

3 big happy faces= Treat Avalon DAy! (Like a trip to the movies or something). It sounds dumb, but I get so excited when I get to put on a new sticker, and it shows me exactly how much I've done in a week, or how much I need to get off my butt and do.

Yesterday I also went out and bought my first pair of super good shoes- New Balance for running... (AND I got $40 off, cause my almost-step-bro works there!) I'm so stoked. My run today was so much better than usual, I couldn't believe the difference.

So today: with my Forrest Gump Magic Shoes I ran for about 20 minutes. I was really proud of myself, cause I ran more of it than I ever have before, and my 'stance' was really good. I felt for the first time like I was doing it right, instead of fighting myself the whole way. YEAY!

More, and less long-winded, updates to come soon! (off to give myself a sticker!)

Welcome to the Hamsters. You have a *chart* ?! Dang... I need to get organized! I do like your rewards system. Just today I was making one up that states that I cannot post on *any* threads unless I have posted at least 30 minutes of exercise on the Hamster thread. I think that ought to get me moving!

Tonight's plan: Short run (20 mins), upper body weights, and *maybe* some yoga. I'll try to post after I do it.

Great Hamstering, everyone!!

Welcome Avalon! You've got a great plan there. And the sticker chart idea is really cool!

If anyone's interested I can post a link to this cute little chart for logging miles by coloring in the footprints. It's for kids, but I used it to log running miles last summer when I was aiming for 100 miles in 100 days.

budda! Hey, way to run! That was amazing!

Thanks my littermates!

Here is my question though: how do you tell how far you've run in miles? I'm not good with distances (unless we're talking nautical miles from the air or water)... do you have a counter or something?

How do you figure it out?
