California passing law: 100% renewable energy by year 2045

California: The State Assembly has just passed a bill that will require California to obtain 100% of its electricity from solar, wind, and hydropower by the year 2045. The California State Senate and Governor are fully expected to pass the bill into law.

In addition, many countries have already set timelines to abolish the sale of standard gasoline and diesel vehicles, and to only permit the sale of electric and hybrid vehicles:

Many of us will live long enough to witness this clean energy future. My nephews will live most of their lives in this clean energy future. Their children will read about the "Fossil Fuel Era" in their history books.

I've had a few (mostly older) people tell me that this change would never happen in my lifetime. Why do older people seem to give up hope for the future?

That's because older people have been to the school of hard knocks a little longer than younger people usually have. You tend to get a little more cynical as time passes you by. -- lol Also, many do not realize that the State of California has the third biggest resource of crude oil in all of the USA, right behind Texas and Alaska. Therefore, Big Oil isn't going to like this bill one bit.

That having been said though, I am very optimistic that this bill will pass into law. Afterall, humans haven't got a lot of time left before climate change on this planet gets totally out of control. By the way, I'll be turning 64 yrs. old in less than two months time. Would you consider me to be one these older people that you're talking about? -- :serious:

Is nuclear energy considered a "renewable" by this law?

A fundamental question is, can renewables ever fully match the excess of power we have tapped from fossil fuels? Most estimates say, reserves of fossil fuels will run out, within 50-years, at which time, the industrial age, as we have known it, will come to an end. The oil-bubble will burst. Can clean energy sources sustain the population explosion that was created by fossil fuels, or is there going to have to be a reduction in the number of people living on earth? If the latter, I hope the transition is not too traumatic. I'm 67. :serious:

Kudos to California for getting a head start on the transition.

Reduction in energy use is a great reason to be vegan.
