I'm going to LA for a vacation in less than two weeks and I'd like suggestions from residents there of what to do. I don't care to go to Disneyland. Is there another amusement park nearby?

Are there state or national parks nearby? I do want to see some famous people and go to a live taping of a TV show.

I LOVE L.A.! I had so much fun last time I was there. One of the best things we did was pack a picnic and go to Griffiths Observatory--it's a big telescope up in the hills (above the Hollywood Bowl, I believe) and there's a great view of the Hollywood sign from the grounds.

Hello,

If you don't want to go to DL, but you want to go to an amusement park, you might try Knott's. It's cheaper, too, so that's good. You might also check and see if they've got deals (I got $12 off admission last time because I brought a Coke can -- I don't even drink soda, but that seemed worthwhile
). There's also Universal Studios, which you might want to check out if you're into the star-watching thing, but I warn you, it's B-O-R-I-N-G!! I only go when I get free tickets, and even then I'm not sure why I bothered to...

Live tapings generally aren't a problem to get into -- do you have a specific show/studio in mind?

Depending on how long you're staying, there are a good chunk of national parks that are worth driving to, but if you're just going to be here a little while, you may not like the drives. Some of the beaches are nice (NOT in LA or LB -- go north or south a bit and they become pretty), but the LA forest isn't much. There are some good hikes, though.

If you like jazz, we've got one of the best jazz scenes around. We also have great theater if you want to see any of that (plays, musicals, ballets, concerts...).

If you want more specifics I can check out one of those CA vacation books from the library -- they're pretty good at making my town sound like a nice place to visit!
PM me with questions if you have any; I'm not always good at finding where I've writtern. Have fun!

Definitely do Knotts! I use to live very close by and went there a lot during my childhood. It's much more mellow than many of the other parks. http://www.knotts.com/

Also, you might want to consider 6 flags Magic Mountain if you like fast rides. http://www.sixflags.com/

There is also Golf N' Stuff http://www.golfnstuff.com/

For water parks, you can try http://www.wildrivers.com/ or http://www.ragingwaters.com/

There is so much to do! It all just depends on what part you're visiting and how far you are willing to drive.

Don't forget the beaches and the shopping!

Universal Studios is not that boring, especially if you know nothing about the movie business, and it's fairly close to Pasadena. You could probably get to Magic Mountain relatively quickly, too, which was mentioned above. That's a real amusement park. Uni Studios is more of a theme park.

Thanks for the great ideas. I went to Universal Studios in Florida years back and I thought it was fun except for the horrendous line-ups, so I'll probably skip that in LA. Magic Mountain sounds like a great idea though, and I hadn't thought of checking out the jazz, and I love jazz! I think we're going to try to get into the Price is Right and/or Jeopardy. I wanted to be ON Jeopardy, but there are no contestant searches there at the time.

Of course, there are lots of haunted places that just haven't reached the status of fame.

If you ever visit the Queen Mary, you can watch a video there that tells you about the many spirits and encounters reported on it.

As far as seeing famous people - go to Burbank, I believe on Olive, in the building where they have the KIIS FM studios. There is a restaurant called Dalt's (or something like that - it is a sandwich place - NOT expensive). There are ALWAYS people there and you can also roam the halls by the studios. Well, you're not supposed to but you can if you act lost. Another thing to do is go to the Santa Monica pier. Also in Burbank (Burbank studios) you can take a tour of the Tonight Show set and the Days of Our Lives set. If you want to see Leno you have to get tickets/stand in line early.

I'd love to see the set of Days! Is Y&R filmed there too?

I was looking at the amusement and waterpark websites, and holy crap are they expensive! That is, when you convert it to Canadian dollars. Every dollar I spend in the States, I'm spending $1.60 of my hard earned Canadian money.

So it's $72CDN for a day at Magic Mtn, which is just not worth it.

Yikes! That's a nasty exchange rate! I'd opt for Knott's, then... MUCH cheaper. Actually, my sister might know some people who work there (which would lead to discounts) -- I'll ask her when she comes back from vacation.

I can't think of anything Haunted except the Queen Mary. I think the Winchester House would be too far of a drive, though that's a great place if you ever get a chance.

EXACTLY!

Apart from im in New Zealand!!

ITS SO DUMB! And they have all these 70's style t-shirts..

The only thing that makes them 70's style is that they have a dumb print on it saying something about america and the 70's...

And then everyone thinks that they are all revival..etc...

The clothing co-orpirations are so commericailized! I know thats there mission! but still they make everyone look like clones..(well people who buy into it)
