I don't know if this is in the right place, but it is mostly a vent. Just now, an ex-coworker of mine posted this on facebook.

At the Calgary Stampede, in 2010 alone, 6 horses died. This is the only animal who got any media coverage, but I'm sure there were lots more. This is Calgary's biggest, most disgusting tourist trap. Everyone dresses up in their chaps and cowboy hats and gets piss drunk and goes to cheer on the cowboys riding bulls. It's sick that even with the ridiculously high death toll of these animals, people still think it's great entertainment and all in fun.

Thanks for listening, VB.

What they say to the general public and what they do when in the company of their buddies are often vastly different.

I'm from Calgary and there's nothing that makes me more enraged than the constant Facebook status updates about how ~YAHOO fun and awesome!!!~ the Stampede is. I defriended a girl last year who said something like "We're Calgarians, we don't have gay parades, we have Stampede Parades!" (Calgary does, of course, have a Pride parade, like most major cities.) The whole thing makes me rageblind. Especially since Calgary is not an entirely unhip city - there are plenty of enlightened, artsy pockets, and they have (IMO) Canada's coolest mayor. Yet somehow around Stampede everyone turns into an animal-cruelty-loving bigot. Ugh.

And those same 'animal-cruelty-loving' people delude themselves into thinking it's all A-ok. I had a debate on Youtube once with a guy who insisted that 1. they don't shock the buckers in the shute and 2. when they did, it hardly hurt them. How you could 'not do something' and 'do-it painlessly' is something I can't wrap my head around but that was his stance. Even when I introduced links to the company that makes the prods that are commonly used when working with large animals, that showed that the gadgets emit something like 4000 volts, he denied it. Denied the size of the charge, denied that it hurt.....Totally deluded. And we never even touched the issue of crippled calves, broken limbs......Unbelievable.
