I'm in the process of purchasing a new car. The problem I'm up against is that I want several options that are only inclusive of a car with leather. For example, I would like satellite radio, sun (or moon roof), power seats, etc. Trying to find one without leather seats is near impossible, especially for the car I have picked out (Nissan Altima).

I'm curious what your thoughts are on this? Would you get the options with leather or settle for lesser options without leather?

I wouldn't buy a car, especially a new car, with leather seats. There are lots of cars out there to choose from.

Yeah- I don't think I could bring myself to sit on those seats every day without crying. I would sacrifice a feature or two. I've sacrificed enough so far- maybe I would find a car I could live with instead.

I wouldn't buy a car with leather seats, even if it had all the fancy gizmos and luxuries available.

Personally I love leather seats and couldn't care less about the animal since it's already dead.

What you could do is use your desire for fabric seats into a price reduction-it's a starting point for negotiation although personally I hate doing deals that way.

YMMV

1st off you live in the U.S. so buy a car made here, helping our economy improve is step 1 in helping animals (cant help much with out any source of income) 2nd there are alot of american made cars that you can find better than a nissan that you can get all of your options with out leather. matter of fact being that its a car made here you can special order it with ONLY what you want on it and youll have it in a matter of weeks.

The animal in meat is already dead, too. The point is, buying meat supports the industry of making more meat by killing more animals. It's the same with leather. Sure, the animals already dead, but buying it supports the leather industry of making more leather by killing more cows.

I'm confused by this too. I'm new to being vegan but isn't the whole idea to not support the companies that use animal products so we stop creating a demand for them and the companies stop using them?

It's harder to avoid leather interiors in cars in America, but it can be done.

Quote:

Stick to your ethics and don't get a car with leather seats. You will probably feel like a hypocrite every time you sit down if you get a car with leather.

Also, if you are any kind of audio fanatic like I am, you should get the crappiest stereo they offer and take your car to a real stereo shop and get a nice one with navigation, satellite, CD/DVD, iPod control, aux inputs and USB. I use USB the most. I love being able to pop in a thumb drive and have thousands of songs readily available.

Thanks for the responses.

For me this was a no-brainer decision but I was interested in what others had to say and was also curious if anyone else had the same problem when car shopping. I made it clear to the dealer that I wanted no part of leather seats. Supposedly there are a couple of 2011 Altimas out there with what I'm looking for but still not sure they can get one since the dealers that have the car aren't close to me.

sleepydvdr - I think you have a good suggestion there. If they can't secure the car they found I may just do that. Thanks.

As far as buying American, I simply haven't had any luck with American cars. I have owned two (Ford and Buick) and had many issues with both. Meanwhile, my Honda, Mazda and Nissan were excellent. The Honda had over 190K and still ran like a champ when I sold it. My Maxima is also still running great at 127K and has retained it's value extremely well. As much as I would like to buy American I can't bring myself to do it when it comes to a car. Hopefully those profiting from my purchase in Japan use some of the money to help the animals in their country. :)

Most dealerships are part of a larger corporation and they often will transfer cars from one of their other dealerships within a couple hundred miles to one near you for free. If they have to transport very long distances, they usually charge something like $500-$800. Ask them about this option. Or if you can wait a few months, you can custom order one.

I used to be patriotic and bought cars from American car companies (GM, Ford, Dodge). They were all crap. They broke down the most, wore out the fastest and lost the most value. I only buy Honda and Toyota now. Love 'em. Sorry America, but your cars are junk.

I agree, don't buy an American car. I will never own one. I used to have a Volvo and I now have a Toyota, and they're both good cars. Everyone I know who has an American car has problems with them.
