My name is Shane. I've been vegetarian most years since 1994, and vegan since 2006.

I'd been looking for a ways that I could make my professional work follow the ideals that I follow in my personal choices. In the last few years being vegan it's become so clear to me how pervasive the use of animals is in almost every business in the U.S. I'm sure most people in this forum can think of examples of things the company they work for does that effectively support the use of animals in some way.

I've been designing and putting together websites as a hobby since 1995 and professionally for the last few years. I often found that a client that the company I worked with had a business that used animals in some way, and they wanted a website to help promote their business. I felt a lot of conflict knowing that if I did my work well, that business would do better, and more animals would suffer.

So, recently I decided that I no longer would work to promote businesses that profit from animal suffering. I left the small company I was working with and formed my own company Vegan Web Development to cater to ethical businesses that do not profit from animal suffering. My goal is to be constantly working with businesses that act in the opposite direction. I want my work to help vegan clients be more successful in promoting a lifestyle free of animal suffering. With this leverage our efforts compliment each other.

I feel much better in business already. I strive to help other vegans change their professions to be in harmony with their personal beliefs.

I joined this forum to network with vegans of course. But also to learn and stay on top of developments in the community.

You've done a really good thing by walking away from a successful position to make a committment to animals in this way. Everday there are more vegan businesses opening up or just promoting themselves online so I'm sure you will not be short of clients.

Welcome!

I can relate to a lot of what you are saying, as I'm a student right now, and at first I worked for the most part in restaurants, where I as a waitress was part of the meat supply chain. Now, I work at a hotel, where I do longer have to be around it, which is much more liberating. Although now that you mention that, I'm about to apply for my first job as an accountant, and I hope that I am not stuck having to do work for a client who mistreats animals in any way. Which is yet another good reason to go into business for myself as soon as I have my CPA license....

Hello and welcome to Veggieboards fellow vegan.

I personally would have no problems changing jobs, if it meant working for a vegan company at lower wages.

Is your business along the same lines as Vegan Mainstream or not?

Sounds like an awesome plan! I have the deepest respect for people like you. I've considered going into advertising myself, but knowing that I'd have to promote meat, dairy and other animal-exploitive products is very hard. I love the creative aspect of advertising, I just wish it wouldn't boil down to "make people buy crap that's bad for them"

I'm holding my thumbs for you!

Thank you all for the Welcome! I'm sorry for the long delay in the reply. I've been hard at work getting setup in our new home in Appleton, WI, starting a veg*n meetup group for our area, going to the Vegan festival, and building our flagship website so I'll have some work I've done personally to show to prospective clients. Phew! It's been a long couple months...

I didn't have my settings on here emailing me when I had replies so I didn't know you all posted. Sorry about that. I'll fix it now. I really look forward to corresponding with this friendly seeming group here. :)

It looks like Vegan Mainstream is focused mostly on the marketing aspect for vegan blogs and other types of presense on the web. My focus at this time is only on building websites for vegan oriented businesses. I am sure I'll setup more blogs and PPC campaigns also. But my focus is on developing applications.

Oh my goodness... I live right outside of Appleton. It's great to hear that someone in our area is making such a huge move for vegetarianism/ veganism.
