I try to buy organic breads (so no GMO franken grains) and esp breads that have UNBLEACHED flours in them. If it doesn't say unbleached for wheat, the wheat might have been bleached.

I would definitely go with something whole grain. I would say the best is the Ezekiel sprouted grain bread. Health food stores and some grocery stores carry it.

if it's an option for you, i heartily recommend a bread maker. almost all of our bread is self-baked. for the majority of our bread, the ingredients are extremely simple: 2 cups of flour (your choice, any combo works), touch of sugar and salt, yeast, margarine, and water. Throw in some raisins or nuts, and in 3 hours, you've got a party.

I second a bread maker, I make all our bread, including vegan cinnamon rolls that are to die for . It is really easy and you then know what is in your bread.

ITA, this is all we eat. It is in the freezer section, it's organic and has several different grains. Even if it is whole grain, if it is made with regular flour it isn't particularly healthy.

Rye is really good for you too though, it has flourine which is good for your teeth. We eat the sprouted bread for breakfast but for snacks we often have rye flatbread style crackers.

dark rye should be wholegrain

Not necessarily. Some are dark because of molasses or coloring.

Always read the ingredients. If a whole grain is the first ingredient, that's good. Some "whole grain" breads really have white flour as the first ingredient. Those won't be as good for you. 100% whole grain is best. I eat Trader Joe's sprouted grain bread lately.

If you want to know how good bread is check the amount of fiber it has in it. Cheap white bread has 1 gram of fiber. Cheap whole wheat bread has two. Good bread has 3 and Ezekiel or some good Hemp bread has 5 grams.

I usually buy Alvarado Street Bakery bread at my health food store. I like the sprouted barely. Its my preferred bread when I can get it.

Ingredients:

Sprouted Organic Whole Wheat Berries, Filtered Water, Organic Raisins, Wheat Gluten, Sprouted Organic Barley, Sea Salt, Fresh Yeast, Soy Based Lecithin, Cultured Wheat.

I think thats not too bad for bread. They make a lot of sprouted grain products. I like them better then ezekiel bread, just my personal taste though.

http://www.alvaradostreetbakery.com/...2/merchant.mvc
