Sooo...I've started realizing that when I don't eat dairy, my nose doesn't run! So I'm starting to watch out on ingredients lists for milk related things...and I swear I just checked EVERY brand of semisweet chocolate chips in Meijer and every one of them had butterfat or milk fat in them. Even the Ghirardelli 60% cacao ones had it. In "Vegan with a Vengeance," Isa makes it sound like there ARE brands out there that don't have it...but I sure didn't find one tonight. Does anyone know of a particular mainstream brand (or type of chip) that is vegan?

Trader Joe's has at least one bag under their name of chocolate chips that are vegan. There is also the brand SunSpire and Enjoy Life that have some. There are probably some others of the "household brands" that might have an "accidentally vegan" chocolate chip/chunk. I can't think of any at the moment, but I remember not long ago I was looking at a bag from some brand and I was surprised that it didn't contain dairy. I wish I remembered who it was...

Edit: I remembered something, if you look at the bars of baking chocolate, in particular the ones from other countries, you'll probably find at least one. Earlier this year I picked up some for smores. Again, can't remember the brands, but I've seen them at several grocery stores in my area.

Edit again: Ghirardelli Semi-Sweet Chocolate "Premium Baking Chips" looks veganish to me:
Semi-sweet chocolate (sugar, unsweetened chocolate, cocoa butter, soy lecithin -an emulsifier, vanilla). Manufactured on the same equipment that also makes products containing milk. Made in a facility that uses peanuts and tree nuts.

I'm not fussy about trace ingredients and I use:
365 organic chocolate chips $4 (and right now they have a $2 coupon).
King Soopers Private Selection brand (organic)
Thanks - I had given up when I picked up the Ghirardelli dark ones so I didn't even look at the semisweet.

I wouldn't worry about the shared equipment thing either -- but in the other ones it was all a part of the actual ingredient list, not a warning about shared equipment.

I will put them on my Trader Joe's list if I don't find any sooner.

I don't know where you live but Wegmans Semi Sweet Chocolate chips have no dairy products in them. I have no idea where the sugar comes from though.

I wrote that and took it out because my memory is fuzzy- I used a major brand recently that was surprisingly dairy free, I thought it was toll house but it wasn't. I can't remember for the life of me right now!

I can usually find at least 2 types of vegan chocolate chips at my local Whole Foods store. They sell a 365 brand that is labeled as Vegan. Not my favorite, but very serviceable. My favorite is the Chocolate Dream vegan chocolate chips. I can always find them at the Whole Foods store.

I usually get the Ghirardelli semi-sweet chips. They are expensive, as chocolate chips go, but it's not something that one buys everyday... I can also find another brand, can't remember the name, at Natural Grocers, but that is not main-stream.

This may not be what you're looking for, but you can find it almost anywhere:

Baker's chocolate is usually vegan. It comes in pretty big blocks, but if you're handy with a hatchet you can make short work of them and turn them into tiny chunks which sub in for chocolate chips just fine.

Also usually about half the price per pound of chocolate- something to consider.

unrelated..."yumy, it looks like you haven't posted in 30 days and that makes us sad! VB is a strong community due to its member participation. Even if you don't have much to say right now please consider posting something that may be helpful to someone else." This reminds me of when it used to say "you haven't posted in 30 days and that makes kittens cry". I didn't post for like 2 months then just cuz I loved seeing that message so much.
