isowish! I always love reading the stuff you post, glad you're first in line here!

My favorite item of clothing (that I'd wear in public ) is a tye-dye tee shirt with rain-forest frogs on it.

I have both cats (3) and a dog but I'm more of a cat person honestly.

I am the oldest of 6. (5 younger sisters).

We all get along pretty well for short periods of time, or when one-on-one, but get all of us together for longer than a day and it gets hectic, though not miserable I guess.

I was in high school when the younger three were born, and then away working at summer camp in the summers (then off to college) so I really felt like I didn't "grow up" with them.

Growing up vegetarian I really was sheltered I think - and grew up in a small community, so wasn't aware of the "challanges" out there... (I also think life was easier way back then - I'm old ya know!) Plus my folks were a known as quirky "health-food-freakish-almost-hippie" folks, so no one questioned it much I guess...

Grade-school was a small rural school without a hot lunch program - we all ate lunches and traded snacks and no one thought a thing about me always bringing peanut-butter-and jelly. Everyone thought my home-made stuff was the best anyway.

When I went to parties and such, my mom always called ahead to make sure there was going to be CHEESE pizza or something I could eat - the idea of eating animals was just foreign to me - like asking me to eat rocks or something - I didn't even think of it as "food". Friends would try to "tempt" me with fried chicken or whatever and I was never interested.

I am sure I consumed some animal products (gelatin, etc.) without knowing it.

When we travelled, we usually packed picnic lunches and our own snacks - though even back then, most diner-type places had grilled cheese sandwiches, fettucini, mac-n-cheese, plenty for lacto-ovos and we never ate fast food. Ever.

In high school I never mentioned it and really only a few friends knew, it didn't seem different or 'weird' at all since I'd grown up that way; There were always plenty of options (chips, junk food or salads and fruit) at parties, friends places, school cafeteris, etc, so it wasn't until about college that I really realized other people out there thought being vegetarian was odd. I met other people in college who were "vegetarian" too and they ate fish, so I assumed it was an OK thing - just a type of vegetarian I hadn't known about... so I did eat fish off and on for maybe a year or less until I really started to THINK about the whole concept... fish=animals=not a vegetable

Ack. Forty and a bit more - age is simply a state of mind anyway (besides - you know what they say about 'older women'...)

Birthday:

Washington State

Dietary Path/Reason Why:

Vegetarian all my life due to my oddly conservative, yet long-haired "hippie" parents who raised me on granola and twigs for "health" reasons (though ironically forced me to drink at least two glasses of milk *gag* *gag* every day! I may need therapy for that one day...)

Currently vegan (due in part to the more tolerant and ...um...friendly individuals on this board!) and for health and compassionate living reasons.

Favorite food(s):

Ethnic and HOT!:

Thai, Indian and Mexican - anything with chiles, garlic or ginger and I'm good, especially if Froggy cooks it, or I don't have to cook it myself.

Brief Intro:

--- Single mom to three wonderful daughters ages 16, 13 and 7, two of them also vegetarian-almost vegan (vegan when with me anyway). They are, of course, my passion, my life, my reason for waking up each morning.

--- Madly, crazy-nuts about a certain VBer...

--- If you haven't already guessed, I love to cook - especially wowing non-veg friends with vegan treats - I love blogging and sharing recipes and other "foodie" stuff.

--- I used to own, and still ride and train, Arabian show horses; love to garden, sew, read, play chess and Scrabble, tinker with friends websites and simple computer "problems"; draw, throw pottery, hang out with my girls, collect antique children's books.

--- I love the out-of-doors, (easy) hiking, nature, camping, spending time anywhere on or around Puget Sound - I love anything and everything about living in the NorthWest.

--- I have wonderful friends, many are my kids' friends parents, co-workers (from a previous job) and friends from church; as well as a bunch of very special, and awesome online friends whom I consider myself just as close to...I love ALL my friends - love talking, chatting, hanging out, going out to eat, shopping, movies, quiet time, noisy times, socializing, just doing "stuff" and most of all, spending time with the people I love.

1.) Best childhood memories would be the cross-country road trips for many summers, in our gigantic and ancient moterhome! We had SUCH a blast! Very idyllic 70's stuff: listening to John Denver and Barry Manilow on 8-track and picnicking on red-checked table cloths - visiting Mt. Rushmore and Yellowstone and Abe Lincoln's birthplace and the Hershey Chocolate Factory and every tourist trap and hysterical monument in between.

2.) Favorite fruit? Fresh Washington state raspberries and blueberries.

Favorite veggie? Artichoke

I like growing tomatoes the most, not much is better than a sun-ripened tomato in the middle of summer...

3.) My favorite piece of art? Um... I don't know that I have one favorite piece. My favorite artists are Rubens and Renoir because of the beautiful way they portrayed fuller-figured women, and Georgia O'Keeffe because, oh my gosh - the colors she used! Stunning...

I also love (and have studied) Pacific Northwest Indian Art.

4.) Most people don't know I was adopted at birth and though my adopted family will always be my "real" family, I was curious. With my (adoptive) parents help and encouragement, in my 30's I did a search that took several years, but located found my birth father and family. They were THRILLED and welcomed me with open arms and hearts. I am incredibly lucky and blessed now, to have two families! Two sets of loving aunts, uncles, grandparents, siblings, cousins... very awesome.

5.) Crazy talent? Um, not that I can talk about in public...

Aww... why thank-you kindly! Your posts inspire me... and give me hope that some day my teenagers will also be able to write in more than single syllables!

---Favorite part about gardening: Being outside and harvesting things I myself have grown.

---Planting this spring/summer: Herbs, kale, tomatoes, zucchini, green beans.

---Embarrassing story to share: Oh gosh... several involving learning to drive, or intimate moments in rather public places. Many having to do with toddlers in the grocery store...

OH! YES!

I was driving a rental car while mine was in the shop and it was a station wagon with those extra seats in the far back. I let my kids (age 3 and 5 then) ride in the far back where they could sing at the top of their lungs with the radio and NOT sing directly in my ears... (They sang ALL the time!)

So, they were singing loudly to the check-out clerk at the grocery store and she cheerfully said "Are you going to sing loud songs all the way home for Mommy?" and they said so innocently: "If we sing very loud in the car, Mommy locks us in the trunk."

Um... yeah... there was silence in the entire store, I swear. Try explaining THAT one!

--- Most exotic place you've ever traveled to: I probably interpret "exotic" differently than most people, but places in the good ol' USA have impressed me the most: The Everglades, Yellowstone, The Grand Canyon, Mt. Rainier...

--- Absolute favorite thing to cook: Curry anything, potato anything or veggies from my own garden.

--- I Like having guests over: I stress a little 'cause my house is small, crowded and never perfectly tidy but I DO love, love, love having people over and do it fairly often!

--- Can I crash on your couch: YES! Any time!
Hey good-lookin'! How's my favorite used-to-be-from Washington VBer?

--- Can I see Mt. Rainier from my house? Yes, If I climb on the roof and lean W-A-Y over the east side... (Or if a couple neighbors strategically cut several dozen huge trees...).

--- Do I have an escape plan for if it blows? No. Other than an "emergency kit" in my van and neurotically carrying my cell phone EVERYWHERE because of this exact worry.

--- Fave Washington produce? Berries. Though Walla Walla asparagus and sweet onions are right up there too.

--- Fave Washington wine? Oh my. There are SO many...

My latest finds, a 2005 Chateau Ste. Michelle Eroica Reisling, Stella Raspberry fruit wine (non-vintage) from Hoodsport, and the Columbia Grand Estates Chardonnays.

--- Been to the top of the Space Needle many a time.

--- Been to McCleary? Yes. My friends and I went to their "Bear Festival" on a lark one summer as rowdy and ill-behaved teen-agers.

--- Sustainable forestry and Spotted Owls? Oh man, you really ARE going to get me up on a soapbox, aren't you? I'm biased because I grew up in and around timber-supported communities and I have family and friends who work in timber-related employment. People call me a "tree-hugger" because I am outspoken about protecting the environment and natural resources - but maybe they don't know I actually think sustainable forestry is a good thing as long as it's managed efficiently, old growth is left standing and efforts are made to protect forest ecosystems. It's a renewable source of revenue for the state and for many people who work and live here (even those not in the timber industry directly). If sufficient old-growth is left standing, spotted owls and other target species won't suffer habitat reduction and end up on lobbyists "endangered" lists. I am 100% for protecting the owls, don't get me wrong; but I think the issues were originally blown WAY WAY out of proportion and alienated a lot of people in the process.
