Question limit: : I'll answer as many as you send me

Gender: I'm a lady

Age: 37

Birthday: December 11th 1969

Location: born in Louisiana, ran away screaming 3 years ago and now I live in "Merry Olde England"

Dietary Path/Reason Why: Vegan. Originally because I felt God was calling me to a life more kind to the animals and the planet. But then I had lots of health benefits that came with it ,so I guess that as well.

Favorite food(s): sweet potatoes, blood oranges, 70% cocoa chocolate

Brief Intro: I am a Quaker who wears plain dress (dress, apron and shawl and occasional bonnet) who has 7 tattoos that mark the changes in my life since I hit 30 years old. Seems like a contradiction, but for me it works. I have been married for nearly 15 years to my husband the Amazing Spiderman who is the sexiest librarian on the planet. He looks less like Tobey McGuire and more like Shaggy from Scooby Do, but that's why I love him. I have been a first grade teacher and owned a small bookshop in rural Louisiana where no one reads and therefore we nearly went bankrupt. Currently I teach part time. I work with teaching EAL (English as an Additional Language) kids how to read and write in English. Now all these kids from India speak with an American accent! I collect all things OZ related (both the book and the film)----I even have the Wizard of Oz Barbie Dolls! I also could probably go on mastermind with my specialist subject being the Pre-Raphaelite painters and their models. Mostly I love spiders as my name suggests. Spiders have always loved me and I consider a spider to be my totem animal who guides me to creative heights.

Picture: I'll have to get Spiderman to get a picture of me and help me put it up. I can also see if he can put up a picture of me playing Will Scarlett on a trip Year 5 did reinacting Robin Hood in the woods.

Website (your own or one of your favorites) http://www.matazone.co.uk/theotherside.html I recommend Mr Snaffleburger.

What is your favorite mammal? the jerboa. Hes like a little Mouse on jumping legs. We have a stuffed toy one called Hunterian named after our favourite science museum in London. http://www.tau.ac.il/lifesci/departm...ges/jerboa.jpg

Compare and contrast your two favorite spiders. It is hard to choose because I love them all in their own special way. I love the Heather Spider (pictured in my avatar) because she is small and pink and is part of the crab family. She is not a net making spider. She is an ambush spider. She sits and waits on the pink Heather flowers and is camouflaged and when a bee or insect comes by POW! She gets them. I am named Heather so I really like this one. And shes a wee one. I also like the pink toe. She is a big tarantula with long curly hairs and little pink balls on the ends of her feet. They always remind me of ballet slippers. http://72.194.97.91:9090/webwallpape...ula_10_640.jpg I like to think of myself as being more like the Heather spider--cute, tiny and pink but in reality I am quite plump with very hairy legs so I guess Im more of a pink toe!

Toby Maguire: vegetarian spiderman = sexy??? Very sexy but not as sexy as my Spiderman

How do you feel about the color blue? I like blue. It reminds me of my dad--it was his favourite colour. But sadly he died from a brain tumour 7 years ago. But when I see blue it makes me smile.

Computers doing something weird and it won't let me put things in bold.

What do you like on your pizza?

Mmmm.pizza.I like caramelised red onion, roasted red peppers and pineapple

Have you ever collected spider webs?

No, I just look and admire. I hate to break up someones home. We tend not to get rid of webs until we are sure no one lives there. Females tend to abandon their webs and make others elsewhere and males are often too lazy to make their own web so they move into abandoned webs left by females.

Have you ever been bitten by a spider?

No never. Spiders have always been attracted to me. If I come in a room and there are spiders they will come out and greet me by coming down on a dragline and stopping about eye level or by crawling out and crawling near me. I know several people bitten by Brown Recluses but mainly because that person was sitting in the spiders house.

by a radioactive spider?

No, but Id love to shoot web. The first year I taught first grade we were making a chart of all the spider facts we knew and this boy wrote Spiders shoot web out they butt--makes me laugh every time.

Black Widows: evil? or misunderstood?

Definitely misunderstood. They only really attack if get into their space and they feel threatened.

Still being weird and won't let me bold things--sorry.

What does your favorite piece of jewelry look like?

I have a pair of sterling silver dangly Celtic knot earrings from the Book of Durham that I got of $10. They are the only pair I wear.

Kickin' around at home: Shoes, socks, sandals, slippers or barefoot?

In Louisiana always barefoot because it was so bloody hot. In England my feet are always cold so socks and sometimes these big mukluk looking slippers we call my Heat be gone booties after an episode of Black Books.

What would you pack for a picnic in the park?

Marinated, baked tofu, grapes and strawberries and hummus and chunks of ciabatta bread

Do you have a favorite three-hanky movie?

Ill cry at anything really. But some films that get me are The Colour Purple and Jesus of Montreal.

Which kind of movies do you like best?

I hate violence and action--car chases and the like. Blech. I tend to like very talky films that are character driven.

When you want to relax, which would you rather do: Veg out in front of the telly, or veg out in a bubble bath with a good novel?

We dont own a telly, but I love to read. But not in the tub. Id be likely to drop the book. But I do read in my spare time. Being married to a librarian helps with that!

Which kind of music can you not live without?

80s alternative is the music of my teen years. So it is what I turn back to. Right now I am having a Kate Bush obsession.

Have you ever seen wildlife up close and personal? (Spiders don't count for this question).

No. Would like to.

If you had a daughter, would you name her Arachne? (I think it's a pretty name myself).

No because I feel like a name should reflect positive characteristics that the child would aspire to and Arachne was a bit conceited and foolish to challenge a Goddess. But I DO think it is pretty. We had a pet tarantula named Charlotte Arachne once.

What is your favorite ethnic cuisine?

Lebanesemmmmmm

If you knew I was coming to visit, what would you whip up for an amazing meal?

I would make risotto with smoked tofu, mushrooms, mango and slivered almonds and for pud chocolate and cashew cream pie.

Do you have any pets?

SadlyI am deathly allergic to animals with fur and feathers. Particularly cats and dogs. I have to only go in a room where one has been and I will go into a fit of sneezing and wheezing. If I should touch their fur I will break out in blistery hives all over the touched surface that spread generally to my face and on rare but frightening occasions, down my throat. It can be hard to work with kids who have pets. This is probably another reason I like spiders. We had a pet tarantula for several years who has sadly gone to that big web in the sky. We dont want to support the pet trade now but are on a list for if someone decides they dont want one we will take it.

How long have you been in England?

3 years and 3 months

Do you have an accent?

Yes I can pass for Canadian--ha ha. I majored in drama for my first BA degree so worked hard to have a neutral accent. Spiderman, on the other hand sounds like he is from Texas.

Which place do you like better to live in: Lousiana or England?

Definitely England--Louisiana still has segregated schools and the KKK

What are your favorite places in England?

Probably London as there is always something going on---a lecture, a museum exhibit, a play

What are your favorite places in Lousiana?

I like plantation homes as I like to see how people used to live. There is this great place I visited on a field trip called Fort Saint Jean Baptise that is a recreation of an old fort and you could really see what life was like back then. I also like Avery Island where Tabasco sauce is made. Yum!

Have you done alot of traveling? Where have you been? Favorite traveling adventure?

I've been an exchange student twice--once in London for a semester in 1990 (where Spiderman asked me to marry him) and once in Wales for a month for our 10th wedding anniversary in 2002. I've been to france and Spain. No real exciting adventures…….but I have gotten locked in a public toilet in every country I have visited. In France they had to break down the door to get me out after my friends tried to explain in very poor French that I was somehow trapped and that the doorknob had fallen off on my side. Very embarrassing!

How did you meet your Spiderman?

That is a long story so I will leave it for tomorrow.

Who is your favorite Pre-Raphaelite painter?

Of the original 3 (Rossetti, Millais and Hunt) I would say Millais particularly his Lorenzo and Isabella http://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/o...es/lorenzo.asp (although Hunt's Isabella is magnificent as well http://www.illusionsgallery.com/Isabella-basil-L.jpg and I think Hunt's best work. But I also love Millais' Ophelia http://www.toffsworld.com/art_artist...es/ophelia.jpg as this is where Rossetti met his muse in the form of the model Lizzie Siddal. But as far as followers of the movement I prefer waterhouse particularly his Lady of Shalott trilogy http://www.ago.net/www/picture.three/waterhouse.jpg

http://tgsrealm.beastlet.com/the_lady_of_shalott02.jpg

Who is your favorite Young Ones character?

Definitely Neil but I like Rick and Vyv as well (Mike the Cool person does little for me)

Which episode of the Young Ones is your favorite?

Definitely Summer Holiday where they go on University Challenge and rob the bank and steal the bus and drive off the Cliff but I have a real soft spot for the party one where Rick does the "telescope with a mouse in it" with the tampon. I also love the episode where Amazulu sings (though sadly they are better live. I bought the cassette and was disapointed)

Any favorite Young Ones quotes?

Anything said by Neil really. I find that we quote Rick and Vyv more in our daily lives ("yes we've got a video!" or "I bet someone does drink it and becomes an axe weilding homocidal maniac." etc) but Neil is my fave.

or when Neil is forced to join the police force "Open up its the pigs!" or when he says "Oh no I'm gonna wee on Lord Snot's head" priceless.

How do you feel about Ab Fab?

I prefer Jennifer Saunders paired up with Dawn French. we've seen French and Saunders live on stage twice and they are the best when together.

Spidagirlie! My favorite apron-clad VBer!

How long have you been a Quaker?

When did you start making your own clothes?

Do you know others who make all their own clothes? If so, are there more of them in London or Louisiana?

Do you ever feel self-conscious when out in public wearing your plain clothes?

Please forgive me for not remembering if you said this in the Mennonite thread. How do you express your Quaker faith other than the clothes?

Do you go to silent meetings?

When you have a need, do you pray before you take action yourself?

Have you read the accounts of George Müeller, the man who ran an orphanage on prayer in the 1800s? I think he was a Methodist.

How would you compare the spiritual condition of most people you meet in England with most people you met in Louisiana?

I'm enjoying your answers, Spidergrrl, and loved learning about that pink-footed tarantula. Everyone else is asking the questions I wanted to so far, though, so I'll just keep reading.

edited to add: call me Ishmael (sorry this is so long, but to anwer completely I have to be wordy!)

tell us more about your tattoos! (I know, that isn't really a question...)Well in order:

1 in 2000--.a little black spider on my right scapula. I got it after my dad died. My mum and I went together and got a wee tattoo on our shoulder (she got a butterfly) I would like to have web put around it and the initials HT TP (me and Spiderman's initials) on the 4 corners of the web

2. In 2001--On my calf--a celtic triangle with each inner triangle coloured in a different colour to represent all the people who were important to me (blue for my dad, green for my mum, red for me and purple for Spiderman) It is my only colour tattoo and the ink is blotchy. I seem to reject coloured ink.

3.In 2002--I got the Chinese symbol for "double joy" usually used as a sign when people get married (I got it to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary) on my right forearm

4. In 2002 also--a hedgehog on my left bicep as this is when we were exchange students in Wales and decided we wanted to move out of the US to the UK. To me a hedgehog seemed very British and I wanted something to remind me of our goal

5. In 2003-- a rather large spider on my right bicep to signal a renewal of creativity and productivity for me. In the US I had been very depressed and run down by the state of education. I had completely stopped making things because I was so tired and run down. Moving to England energised me and I began to write and create again.

6. In 2005---we were originally placed by the teaching agency at The Ramsgate School (the "worst school in Britain" according to League tables. They had less than 5% pass at C or higher for GCSEs) the kids were atrocious. I had a condom filled with spit thrown at me, kids masturbated in my class and threw their spunk on girls. Spiderman had a child thow a computer at him. We got really demoralised but luckily after 6 months he got a great job and we moved. It was then I got number 5 on my right arm above my hedgehog ---the words Levavi Oculos in latin (which means lift up your eyes) with the Egyptian Eye of Horus. I wanted something to remind us that in the depths of despair to look up --look up to God--look up to the natural world and that it would pass. Something to keep our eyes on God and love.

7. In 2006--I became a vegan and I wanted to get to something to celebrate. I got the Sanskrit word Ahimsa on my right arm above the spider.

And no. spiderman doesn't have any tattoos. He says there is only room for one circus freak in our family. Ha ha

did you grow up wearing 'plain dress' or was it something you decided for yourself? If so, why, and in what way is it related to your religion? How do the kids you teach react to your clothing? No I was raised Unitarian but became a Quaker in 2002. In the last few years I have become more and more unhappy with styles of clothing available and the ethics of buying cheap clothes. I was also struggling to love my body. I am very soft and curvy and that often makes clothes fit in uncomfortable ways. I was having trouble buying clothes that fit and didn't let my crack hang out and I was feeling fat all the time which I am not. I am just zaftig. I was miserable and was struggling to think about God or the world or what I could do for the planet because I keep running this negative train thru my head about how my waistband was pinching me. I layed the problem before God and stumbled on a website about a plain dressing Quaker. I was shaking all over every time I looked at her. I got this feeling where the blood rushes in my ears and my heart pounds and I go slightly woozy. I feel this way in Meeting when God is telling me to share something. Everytime I looked at her apron I felt this way. I have felt this way two other times--becoming veggie and becoming vegan. I couldn't say it aloud I just filled a journal with feelings and then when I finally spoke to Spiderman that I thought God might be telling me to wear plain dress to help simplify my life he was so amazingly insightful. He reminded me that the times I had been the most comfortable in the US were when I had dressed like a pilgrim for the month of November and he was right. Those were very comfortable dresses and the apron had pockets that were very useful and practical. So over the next month I gathered fabric and sewed some plain dresses and aprons. So this school year I started off in plain dress and I feel so free. I have 5 dresses and 5 aprons and a bonnet to wear on sunny days. Kids LOVE it. I love having pockets--you need that as a teacher. All my dresses are a solid colour but my aprons are bright and colourful. I have several with geometric patterns that my children lovingly call my "Mosque aprons" and when I wear them they tend to talk to me loads about Allah and the Qur'an and we talk about how we both pray and how our Gods are alike. In December I had a child say "My mother wants to meet you" and I thought "Quoi?" but it was because the girl wanted a "useful apron" for Christmas and her mum didn't know what that meant. Ha ha Several Muslim mums and I have talked about traditional dress and modesty. Even though I have loads of tats I don't show them off at school.

What was your favourite subject at school?

English and drama.

If you don't have a TV, how do you know so much about QI? What made you decide to go see it filmed?Ha ha---we USED to have one and decided 3 months ago when our tv licence was up for renewal that we would get rid of it and sell the tv and give the £ to charity. There was just mostly rubbish on tv and we were wasting lots of time watching ****e. We felt we would rather read and talk and save that £. what made us see it? I have a big wet crush on alan davies (and we both admire Stephen Fry)

Who is a better cook: you or your husband?

Me but that's because I like to do it. \\He can but it doesn't thrill him like putting together tastes and textures does for me. But he loves to eat my food!

what is your favorite sound? The phantom pigeon sound. We have this chimney where this pigeon goes down and hoots and it comes out all eerie and far away and spooky like an episode of Scooby Do. But really…..probably Spiderman's voice as he gently wakes me up in the morning.

what is your favorite smell? That's easy. The smell of the tumble dryer as the hot air comes out of the vent. When I was a child and I got off the bus and smelled that I knew someone who loved me was inside and waiting for me.

do you have a favorite kind of spider?

I particularly like the Bolas spider who puts a drop of sticky on the end of a piece of silk and lassos her prey. She's pretty cool.

if a movie were to be made about you, who would you want to play you?

Do you prefer sweet snacks (like candy) or salty snacks (like chips)?

I actually like both. I do this thing we call the "Lois" after an old boss of mine where you eat something salty and then smack your lips and say "Mmm, now I need something sweet" and then eat something sweet.

What is your favorite season?

Autumn.

What is your favorite sport?

None. But if I HAD to pick, gymnastics.

What is your favorite Simpsons episode?

The Lord of the Flies episode where they get stranded on the island and the twins say "We're so hungry we could eat at Arbys"
