I've tried cooking with tempeh four times. At some point you just have to give in and admit defeat. There are so many foods I do like, why would I keep torturing my tastebuds with poopy food?

Now that I'll accept. I've read many times on here over the years about people just cutting up tempeh, sauteeing it in a pan with some veggies, and eating it over rice. Well of course it's going to suck!

No matter what I'm making, I cut it into cubes, then I steam it for about 15 minutes over veggie broth.

Then, I might coat it in sauce or marinade and then cook it as I'd cook anything else (I made nasi goreng the other night and just covered it in soy sauce then added it to the pan).

Sometimes, I will steam it then make it into "chicken salad" for sandwiches -- which is basically cutting it up with a pastry blender and adding celery, toasted almonds, salt, pepper, and mayo. I haven't made that in a while, sounds good.

Hmm, I like sauteed tempeh with veggies and some Braggs/soy sauce.

I don't like Rice Dream but the Rice Dream cookie sandwiches are really good so maybe the pint I got was off.

There's only 1 thing on my list and it's so spectacularly bad it wound up as the only item taking up an entire shelf at Big Lots. Somebody in a key decision-making capacity was so absolutely blasted from conception to shipping this product I'm surprised they still function on the job at all. Or maybe they don't. The winner is: Tom's of Maine anise-flavored toothpaste.

In defense of Yves Veggie dogs, the spicy variety isn't too bad of you split them length-wise and pan sear them in a little chili oil, but that's a lot of effort for a not-dog.

You've obviously never tried the cinnamon-clove flavor! The flavor in itself is actually not all that awful (although it's not great... it's not fresh at all), but it gives me sores in my mouth! It severely inflames my tongue and lip piercings (which leads to infection) and it makes the "skin" inside my mouth actually peel like sunburn would! bleh! exclamation point!!

I was using and enjoying TOM's fennel toothpaste for sensitive teeth, when it suddenly disappeared from the shelves. I sent them an email inquiring about it, and their response was they had discontinued it, but had I tried the wintermint flavor? Well, <cough cough> it's not really the same.

The hummus bashing saddens me. Sure, the store-bought hummus is a tad too creamy for my tastes, but it will do in a pinch.

The only vegan product I've actually thrown out instead of consuming was some rice milk with an insanely high sugar content. It was too sweet to drink.

Bingo! I used to hate tempeh. Had it many times cooked in various different ways but I never liked it. Until one time I ate in a proper Indonesian restaurant in Amsterdam. One of the dishes contained tempeh and it tasted fantastic! Tempeh cooked correctly is very, very good.

Maybe I got lucky, but my Tom's of Maine deodorant is fine. I have the Lemongrass scent, it makes me smell a little citrusy. I haven't tried any other scents.

Amen, brother. That Vegan mozerella reminds me of the time in kindergarten (or was it my second year at uni?) when I ate liquid hand soap.

Tom's of maine deodorant is as effective as rubbing one's underarms with banana peels.

I used Tom's of Maine deodorant for a while. I didn't have any problem with it at first, but then I started to experience a lot of skin itching around my underarms. No redness or rashes, just a lot of itching. Either they changed the formula or I developed a slight allergy to it, so I stopped using that brand. (It's probably the allergy choice; I tried a different "natural" brand and had the same itching).

Holy crap... I LOVE Tom's of Maine Cinnamon-Clove toothpaste! I use it on a daily basis and I have to say, I have never experienced any of the problems you speak of! I also have a tongue piercing and a lip piercing, and they do not react badly whatsoever. Hmm...

I also love Boca,Tempeh, Primal Strips, some Amy's products, Tom's of Maine deodorant, Yves deli slices, and many other things that people have denounced here. Hehehe!

My bottom 10 are:

1. Tofutti cheese- I was so disappointed when I tried this. I thought I finally found a good vegan cheese, and of course it tastes like crap.

2. Road's End Organics Dairy-Free Mac & Chreese- Nice concept, but no flavor!! I had to add tons of garlic powder, salt, and margarine to this to get it to be edible. As others have said, too much effort for a convenience food!! Why would I buy it if I have to add half my pantry to it?? I'll just make it myself.

3. Kiss My Face Olive Oil Soap- Because I'm allergic to it! YAY itchy hives!

4. Kiss My Face active enzyme deodorant- It smells like mold and doesn't work for very long!

5. Rice Dream Vanilla Rice Milk- I love original rice milk, but for some reason, the vanilla is just too dang sweet for me!

6. Stonyfield Farms O'Soy yogurt- The consistency is just gross- syrupy and snotlike- and it's too sweet with not enough tang! I like the Silk brand.

7. Most natural granola bars- they're just too dang chewy! I eat one and my head hurts afterward!

8. Athenos hummus- I'm spoiled by local Mediterranean restaurants who make their own hummus. This stuff is just too thick and pasty! The only store-bought hummus I actually like is Cedar's.

9. Any veggie chick'n patties- very bland and soggy texture.

10. Brussels sprouts and Cauliflower- ICK!!

10. Pete's Tofu-2-Go, Mango flavour - "Go" is the opertative word here. I want them to go and go far, faaaarrr away. Like to say, oh, I don't know... off the edge of the universe or something? How Pete does this to tofu and is still able to sleep at night, I don't know. All I DO know is that it should be illegal to do this to soy. Unfortunately, it's not.

9. Gardenburger's BBQ chik'n - Cruelty to fake animals if ever there was. At least the used axle grease/spent diesel oil combination that's meant to be the BBQ sauce was sorta ok - IF you're into eating used axle grease mixed with spent diesel oil, that is.

8. Boca Burgers - Wonderful stuff if you want to lose your lunch for the next week and a half. Lousy stuff if you want to actually keep your food down for any length of time.

7. Nayonaise - Vomit of the tofu gods, through and through. The Nasoya company should have flushed it, not bottled it.

6. Nasoya Tofu - I made a typo once and called it "Nastoya" but it really fits. It IS Nastoya - Nasty @ss Soya.

5. Soy Delicious Orange and Vanilla ice cream - Toxic waste never tasted so.... toxic. Some of my tastebuds have grown back since then, but the rest still aren't speaking to me.

4. Amy's Shepard pie - Gone off spices (I think those were spices ) floating lifelessly in a semi-gelatinous glop littered with vegetables long past their prime all encased in a lovely wallboard enclosure (They call it the "crust" or something? ) . Eating a septic-flooded shepherd's pasture would have been more flavourful.

3. Every vegan cheese I've ever tried - My therapist says that with enough medication, electroshock therapy and maybe a lobotomy or two, I'll be able to block this crap from my mind. I think it's going to take muuuuch more than that, to be honest.

2. Pacific Brand Hazlenut Milk - Liquid sugarsalt meets nuclear waste in a vile smackdown of nausea-inducing proportions. Even chocolate powder couldn't save this disaster (Nutella in a glass, my ssa ).

And the number one item on the "Do manufactuerers really hate veg*ns or do they just despise them muchly" list is....

1. Stonewall's Cajun Flavoured Jerkee - MMMM.... chemical flavoured vinegar straight from the bayou OR what I imagine alligator bile/crocodile sh!t to taste like.

hip whip

veganrella, soymage parmesan, any other vegan cheese product that isn't VG mozzarella

boca burgers (vegan original)

o'soy yogurt

this faux cream cheese crap that wasn't tofutti (maybe it was soymage?)

every soy yogurt I've tried was bad. The Silk brand tasted exactly the way that dirt smells, if you know what I mean. OSoy... well, it just tasted bad. And WholeSoy was chunky.
