Just curious... not trying to start a debate...

Ok, I saw on Primetime tonight about people who feel as if they were meant to be amputees... I believe it was a reapeat, I'm sure I've seen the same episode before...

Anyway... I was just curious on others views on that. Such as compared to those who change their sex. Or for that matter, their breasts/noses/ears, etc......

What do you think of sex changes as compared to those who want to amputate a part of their body? I noticed those who wanted to lose a limb said they just feel like that's how they were meant to be, as do those who get sex changes.

Perhaps breast implants and nose jobs aren't on the same level (though maybe they are... they have seemed to be more out of vanity-not assuming-but society seems to have more of an influence on things like that, where as sex changes seem to be more personal/how you're born than society influenced) I don't want to get cursed out from anything I've said, to each their own, I'm don't judge nor assume-just wanna make that clear...

I'm just honestly curious how everyone feels about the voluntary amputation vs any other body modification... (sex changes is just what happened to pop into my mind )

ETA: I don't personally feel as if I need anything amputated... I've always been all for anyone who feels as if they need to modify themselves in way that makes them feel more like "themselves"... yet after seeing people wanting to have body parts amputated (legs, hands...) I was like, wth? Perhaps because my mom had one of her legs partially amputated from a car accident (before I was even a thought), and knowing the physical pain she suffered due to it is maybe why I can't understand that... but my mind couldn't help but think in another direction... such as if someone felt that was how they were meant to be, then what makes it different from, for instance, as i've said, a sex change? Just made me curious.

Well, I have no knowledge/experience on the subject, so just from a 'how do you feel about it' perspective, I personally don't get it, not even a little bit. I understand the nose job or breast implant/reduction. I can even comprehend someone wanting a sex change. The amputee portion is beyond me however. But I've been known to come around after hearing other people's point of view. I would need to hear arguments from people who are for it and why. I will check back to see what others have to say.

Well in the end it's none of my business really what consenting adults want to do with their own bodies.

It's weird, but they can do what they want. I don't think they should get disability or anything because it's something they did on purpose. I know it can be argued that a lot of people are disabled because of things they chose to do and they ended up getting hurt.. but to me, that's different.

Yep, it's my body - I'll do with it what I want. And other wilfully-minded adults can do the same. (to their bodies, not mine )

Well, a person that's wants an amputation could end up having problems with the amputation itself and that could cost insurance co which would end up costing us. They could become disabled to the point where they would require assistance and that would cost us via taxes. The list could go on and on.

If you read a bit more about it you'll see they normally prefer to remove a toe or finger. Although I've read articles on that site by people celebrating having had an arm or leg amputated, they have always been by medical reasons, so I don't know if it's ever been taken to that extent.

Gaya - That is true, but the same can be said about piercings, tattoos, heck, even smokers. Although I hope anyone considering this would do it in the safest and most danger free way possible.

I saw this show about a man (think he was in the UK) that wanted his leg amputated just above the knee. He was having a hard time finding a doc to do it and even considered doing it himself. Who knows what issues could arise from such a situation.

on the BME website they have pics of people who amputated hands and penises. (it's gross)

look, I don't care what people do to themselves, but frankly, tattoos and peircings are addictive.what if you lop off a couple toes and realize that's not going to do it for ya?

The amputations aren't nearly as gross as the wide variety of penis mutilations. *shudder*

Warren Ellis always says "don't look" but I do anyway.

I think I read on BME quite a while back about this couple who were engaged/newly married. They both decided to take off of their ring finger, at the knuckle to "symbolize" their marriage. They did it themselves.

Found the link, if anyone even wants to read the interview: http://www.bmezine.com/news/pubring/20050401.html **warning: there are pictures. one is a closeup of the finger healing** I guess it's sort of mild, but lots of people don't like seeing that stuff.
