I read about that in the Metro. I doubt it's due to overfishing since it was in St James' Park, but it's a novel, if cruel, way of dealing with the pigeon problem.

Was there more than one pelican eating more than one pigeon?

I kinda like pigeons...but animals will be animals. They do strange things when they are around humans too much. Hmm. Wish I could talk to the pelican, see what it thinks of all this.

Makes me wonder, if an animal becomes numerious, is our responsibility to step in and control their numbers or it is acceptable to let nature take it's course. In this a case letting a predatory species oppertunistically start eating the common animal in question.

I just feel sorry for the pigeon - it was much cuter than the pelican. But I wonder: If I was a pelican, would I do the same, or stick to fish?<br><br><br><br>
Strange...

<span style="color:#008000;">That picture was sad enough for me, there's no way I could watch a video on it. The worst part is that the pigeon had to suffer with fear and panic for 20 minutes. Do pelicans keep fish in their pouches that long, or was it confused?<br><br><br><br>
An RSPB spokesman said: "It is almost unheard of for a pelican to eat a bird. Their diet should be strictly fish."<br><br><br><br>
Almost unheard of makes me feel like it has happened before. And the pelicans have been there since "King Charles II's reign as a gift from the Russian ambassador." Does anyone know how long ago that was? And if there are only five pelicans there, it must be a very isolated area.</span>

Maybe this is a stupid question, but why didn't someone try to save the<br><br>
pigeon? I don't think I could just stand and watch for twenty minutes;<br><br>
I would probably be the crazy person chasing the pelican all over the place.

Do you prevent dogs from eating chopped up cow leftovers?<br><br><br><br><br><br>
This is just another case of a carnivore adapting to the humans world.

A predator adapting new behavior. I wonder if it was due to the overfishing problems.</div>

<br><br><br><span style="color:#008000;">Yeah, but dogs have teeth. ^_^ And if the cow was still living and thrashing around, then you're damn right I would try to prevent it.<br><br><br><br>
And I imagine it wouldn't have been able to move very fast with a pigeon in it's mouth. I would have risked a gorging to get the pigeon out.</span>

Nothing personal against the bird you understand.

To me that's what made this more distrubing then hawks/falcons moving into NYC to prey on pigeons there.<br><br><br><br>
I'm thinking of some kind of animal control related birth control or sterization program would be nice.<br><br>
Around here, Canadian geese are extremly overpopulated and despite being inland, we have seagulls around!..seagulls seem to be a worldwide problem.<br><br>
Sadly it seems like many people view common animals as somehow less worthy of humane treatment and so whatever comes up to control their population is ok.<br><br>
I curiously read what posters responded to this pelican eating a pigeon scenario which further reinforced this view. Pigeons definatly seem to fall into this catorgory.

This definitely tops a lot of the weird things I've heard about. They removed the video I think cause I can't view it. Or maybe it's cause I'm at work and they block stuff like this cause I should be doing work instead of surfing the internet :p

It makes my stomach churn.<br><br><br><br>
Maybe the pelican knows the peigeons are not scared of it so eats them instead of putting more effort into catching a fish.<br><br><br><br>
There are weird humans so it may just be a weird pelican.

So it's ok for a human to kill a cow and feed it to a dog, but not ok for a dog to kill a cow directly?<br><br><br><br><br><br><div class="quote-container"><span>Quote:</span>

What if this caused the pelican to starve to death?

Well, they gotta eat too. And the pigeon must be whats avaliable. With pollution and stuff now adays, for all we know, that Pelican gets stomach aches eating those fish. I really don't know what to say about this. It's confusing to me.
