Oh man, I'm so angry... Well, as angry as I can get, which isn't that angry...

<STORY>

3 Thanksgivings ago my then-girlfriend (an omni) invited me to her parents' for dinner. She knew full-well I'm a strict vegetarian and she was quite proud of the various vegetarian concoctions she had come up with. She also made her magical bloody mary's. What made them so great was the classy vodka, worcester sauce, and clamatto juice instead of tomato juice. She obliged to substitute hot sauce for the worcester, for obvious reasons, but I didn't even think to ask if the "clah-mah-tuh" juice (the pronunciation is important) was vegetarian. I assumed she knew and would have warned me.

So Thanksgiving comes around and after some 5 or 6 bloody mary's, her old man says "hey stacy, does this CLAM-AY-TOE juice actually have clams in it???" and Stacy laughs and says "of COURSE not!" And that's the end of that chapter.

</STORY>

Yesterday, however, I stumble upon some clamatto juice and take a look at the ingredients. Of course, there's "dried clam broth" in it. Needless to say I instantly fell to my knees and wished my ex-gf dead via various slow painful methods. I'm not mad that I drank clams - I've accidentally consumed non-vegetarian stuffs before and since then - but I have no doubt she knew. She was always giving me the "...but you can't tell it has meat in it" about various foods. This has certainly ruled out any serious relationships with any sort of omnivore. Casual dating, perhaps, but that's it.

Max's maxim: Eat meat? Hit the street.

Anywho, that's my story. I don't actually wish her dead. I wish her alive. But miserable.

a bloody mary made with tomato juice instead of clamato (ick) is called a 'caesar'.

and i'm sorry, i do think it's funny that it didn't occur to you that clamato had CLAM stuff in it. i mean, it's right there in the name, even.

I know!!! What the hell?!?!? I should have asked, but as I recall, I was thinking along the lines of "crab chips" ya know? Or is that a Maryland-thing?

Still, I don't know which, in retrospect, is worse: That I didn't know, or that I actually believed the sadistic **** would have told me outright.

Hey wait a minute, kreeli, you seem to know an awful lot about the incident...

Max, I'm sorry that sucks.

Kreeli: not to be a pain but i thought it was Caesars that had Clamato juice which is a brand name and that has clam juice. A bloody mary is any brand of pure tomato juice plus seasoning. I could be wrong though. I'll look into that.

Sorry to laugh at your pain, but I also find it amusing that you didn't realize Clamato juice had clam in it. However, what I find even more bizarre is that someone somewhere took a drink of tomato juice and said "Hmmm...could use some shellfish" and then marketed the swill! Bleh!!

I also don't think it's impossible to trust an omni significant other. My bf made spaghetti with jarred sauce a while back and he checked the label to make sure it was ok then made me check the label just in case he missed something.

Indeed. It's like what's next?? Nut's 'n Gum? Brine lemonade?? Caterpillar urine squishees?

Again, I refer you to crab chips and goldfish - if they're vegetarian, why couldn't clamato juice be vegetarian as well???

Wow, do you think she gave it to you on purpose? If so, not nice at all. There *are* omnis that are very trustworthy, though, so don't give up on them completely!

On a side note, I find it disturbing that there's a similar product out there called "Beefamato", and yes, it is tomato juice with beef juice mixed in.

When I was an executive recruiter, one day I ended up on the phone with the marketing director for Clamato. (I think they are owned by Motts... though who knows now) I thought it was so funny... Of course he was interested in a new job... he's the marketing director for CLAMATO. LOL. Anything would be an improvement!!!

Just goes to show you... for every lame product out there, there's someone who's getting paid a lot of money to convince you to buy it.

Sorry, MP.

Just to get TOTALLY (well, ok, somewhat) off the subject, my grandmother was really physically allergic to fish. I mean, if she ate fish, she would be hurling for 24 hours. One day she was staying at my uncle's and a couple of my other uncles came over to visit. They got the bright idea that they would feed her fish disguised so that she wouldn't recognize it, and they fed her quite a bit of spot. Well, she had to go to the ER due to dehydration from throwing up.

I still look at the survivors of these guys and wonder how anyone could be so cruel. Ok, insane . . . .

Max, maybe she had bought the only bottle of Clamato ever that didn't have clam juice in it. Hey, you can hope! Maybe it was a freak accident at the bottling plant that went overlooked.
