Twist in My Sobriety by Tanita Tikaram.

A few weeks ago on NPR they were discussing the death of Elliott Smith, the singer-songwriter who did "Miss Misery" which was played over the credits of "Good Will Hunting." I'd like to check out some more of his music.

Anything by This Mortal Coil or Concrete Blonde. Some of Johnette Napolitano's solo stuff is really good, too. And then there's King Crimson, but I think that's already been covered. And Syd Barrett.

Probably will be more popular because it's on the Cowboy Bebop movie soundtrack, but "Knock a Little Harder" by Yoko Kanno and the Seatbelts is a really great song.

"To One In Paradise"- Alan Parsons Project

"Trail of Broken Hearts"- kd lang and the reclines

"So Very Hard To Go"- Tower Of Power

Hmmm... I dunno if these are the "best" songs. I like happy songs usually, but these three are pretty "down". The second one isn't, so much, but it's not really happy either.

Broken trail so long.... a long and tired past...

Emptiness is gone... I've found this place at last...

And here will remain... with only the aim of staying sure and fast...

Leaving just a part of this trail of broken hearts

I'm doing these lyrics from memory, and I might have a word or two wrong.

Google them and you can download it free from their website (can't remember which album it's in but they are both fairly small.)

IMO, it is one of the rare "perfect" albums out there.

Every single thing that Elliott Smith wrote is pure genius. I desperately wish he were still with us, but he's forever in the hearts of those who let him in. A few pages back, I noticed that someone mentioned his song Miss Misery (from the film Good Will Hunting) and wondered if he was worth giving a listen to... all I can say, is Elliott can touch one's soul like no other. He was, I believe, too sensitive for this harsh world.

A very unknown musician (who I've had the absolute honour of meeting after being a fan for many years) is Jimmy Gnecco of the band OURS. If you're ever curious enough to hear one of the best voices out there, check out the album "Distorted Lullabies"... hell, let me KNOW if you'd be interested, and I will happily upload the album for you. I'm so very proud of this band. The first second I heard his soulful voice, I was hooked, and knew I would be for life. Not only is he one of the greatest musicians to be heard, but he has a heart of gold, and will go above & beyond to meet his fans (oftentimes he'll stay for hours after concerts, to hang out with everyone there).. he is a true relic of his kind.

Another amazing band that seems to be practically unheard of (but has a very large, die-hard loyal fanbase) is Porcupine Tree. They've been around quite some time, and released their first album in 1991. I find them to be outstanding, and to me, they're pretty much what Pink Floyd would sound like if they were still releasing music (as a band). They have a sound all their own, that cannot be duplicated. And man, they are an incredible live band.

Well, there's my, ehrm, 3 cents! Thanks for reading ♥

Jerry Joseph - Light is Like Water

Strange pilgrims sail by my window

Steady hands, restless hearts, they set their course

And though many, from a distance, look familiar

I stand unnoticed by these sailors of the Lord

I have read initial stories of how to sail

But these days nothing but the cold sea is sinking in

Strange pilgrims seeking shelter

I do not know them, but I'm sure, it's just as well

Though I would gladly share my juice, my coffee, rigs,

girlfriend, conversation

I keep my distance and my opinions to myself

I have read initial stories of how to sail

But these days nothing but the cold sea is sinking in

They say drowning in the desert, in the ocean

Is for fools and for prophets who cannot swim

Baby love, love is like water

Only water is just like light

A little faith and a paddle

Will surely get you, and all God's children,

Through the night

Strange pilgrims stand by my bedside

Liquid whispers hold me gently while I cry

And in our hands, my new companions, will cross over

With a fearless heart, head to my new home, in the sky

I have read a short story of how to sail

But these days nothing but the cold sea is sinking in

They say drowning in the desert, in the ocean

Is for fools and false prophets who cannot swim

Love, love is like water

Only water is just like light

A little faith and a paddle

Will surely get you, and your baby

Through the night

Love, love is like water

Only water is just like light

A little faith and a paddle

Will surely get you, and your baby

Through the night

<Long backstory alert off topic> I was sitting in the A&R office of Sony records pitching my bands demo CD. Long story short - the dude wasn't buying what we were selling. But he wanted us to know about some new talent that he was interested in. A band whose lead singer wrote lyrics on his arm with a sharpie. It was none other than OURS. Sony never landed OURS - Geffen did - but they did grab up the publishing rights I believe.

Years later - A friend of mine dropped Distorted Lullibies on my desk. I WANTED to hate this CD. But there was no possible way to. It is that good. I was absolutely blown away by Jimmy's voice and the songs were just killer. I became a big fan. He sings with a passion that is astonishing. You can't fake passion like that. It's heart-wrenching.

Years later - The Wallflowers played the House of Blues and I heard that OURS was opening. My friend and I went and were not disappointed. They soooo rocked the joint - though oddly enough - no one else in the crowd really seemed to 'get it.' My friend and I were hanging out downstairs looking for T-shirts while the Wallflowers were playing - and low and behold - Jimmy Gnecco came over and starting talking with us. SUPER sincere and friendly cat. I told him my story re: Sony records. Not only did he know who I had met with - but he said that the same dude supposedly urged Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam (who was on Sony at the time) to 'write on himself with a sharpie' which he did in an appearance on MTV's Unplugged. Hmmmm.

What a very small world indeed.

To summarize: I agree - I highly recommend Ours. Awesome band.
