I can't find a best albums of 2006 thread, so uh... lets use this one!

I'm still discovering stuff I missed from last year, but here are my favorite albums so far:

Cult of Luna - Somewhere Along the Highway

Mouth of the Architect - The Ties That Bind\t

Agalloch - Ashes Against the Grain

Isis - In the Absence of Truth

Espers - II

Red Sparowes - Every Red Heart Shines Toward the Red Sun

Russian Circles - Enter

2006 was a good year for music!

I always bristle at the overuse of "best" lists. They're usually lists of favorites or most popular things. Here is the list of my top 10 favorite new albums in 2006 roughly from most favorite to least favorite:

1. Carnavas -- Silversun Pickups

2. Begin To Hope -- Regina Spektor

3. To Where You Are -- The High Violets

4. Waving Not Drowning -- Citizens Here And Abroad

5. Best Stop Pop -- The Oohlas

6. Red Rover -- Agent Sparks

7. Your Livingroom's All Over Me --- Lemuria

8. Gravity Won't Get You High - The Grates

9. Morningwood - Morningwood

10. Unravelling - Partice Pike

My list of favorite albums that were new to me (I hadn't heard before 2006) in 2006 is below. These are generally albums from groups I hadn't heard before 2006. Once again roughtly most favorite at the top, least at the bottom.

1. Electric Version -- The New Pornographers

2. Death Via Satellite -- theStart

3. Forty On A Fall Day -- Francine

4. Carnavas -- Silversun Pickups

5. Double Dutch - The Eames Era

6. Begin To Hope -- Regina Spektor

7. Twin Cinema -- The New Pornographers

8. To Where You Are -- The High Violets

9. The Chemical EP -- Santa Dog

10. Waving Not Drowning -- Citizens Here And Abroad

I'd like to throw At War With The Mystics by the Flaming Lips into the queue here. I haven't gotten into an album that much since when Ritual de lo Habitual by Jane's Addiction came out back in the early 90's.

I love ISIS, but I actually vastly prefer the Cult of Luna album. I was a little disappointed by Absence of Truth - I'd definitely put it behind both Panopticon and Oceanic. You should also check out Mouth of the Architect, who bring a monster 15 minute track to the table (and yes, it's damned good). Come to think of it, Cult of Luna also have a 15 minute track on their album.

I actually like Isis's new direction (in particular the percussive work) even though I tend to like heavier music, all other things being equal.

Regardless, I have two new CDs to fetch now.
