it completly depends on your current diet and how much exercise you get. alcohol has 7cal/gram btw. if your very active like me, you can get 3800+ calories a day and lose weight

I guess technically if you eat or drink a whole lot of anything you can gain weight. Alcohol is subject to adding weight because people consume it without regard to the amount of calories and whether or not they are thirsty.

Also it provides little if any nutritional value...

Beer is empty calories so you're not really deriving any nutritional benefits, just like with soda.

If you drink a lot of beer every day then you may have more to worry about than gaining a little weight.

beer does have alot of calories in it (generally 200-300 per beer). i was drinking 1-3 beers every day for quite a while but recently cut down because it was keeping my weight at the same place even though i work out a lot.

plus, beer tends to make you want to eat Doritos.... Since I quit drinking, my Dorito consumption has droped considerably.

But really, calories in calories out. A pint of beer is about 200-250ish calories (depending on what you have). Have a couple of pints, and you've had 25% of your daily caloric intake. But, make healthy food choices and you can still enjoy a couple of beers and not gain weight.

For example, I've eaten cereal & soymilk, an apple, a personal pizza, a cookie, a coffee, a rice cake, and an entree salad today. I still have enough calories left for 2 beers and will be at about 1800 calories. And I ran 7 miles today so I burned about 650 calories or so doing that... I certainly won't gain weight from these beers.

absolutely. I'm sure I'll have a snack or two later. And another glass of wine (not in a beer mood tonight ).

A couple of beers a day may also lower the incidence of kidney stone formation

http://www.sciencenews.org/pages/sn_...11_99/food.htm

The more hops, the better. I recently discovered "Indian Pale Ale" and it is loaded with hops. I also found it tastes better not cold

Different beers should be served at different temperatures. Macrobrews like Bud & Coors are marketed to be served "ice cold" because they taste like crap. The colder they are, the less you can taste. No thanks.

Here's a beer serving temp guide: http://www.ratebeer.com/Story.asp?StoryID=479

If you have a Whole Foods Market nearby, check out their (quality!) beer selection some time. IPA is only the beginning, my friend.

Hay Amy!

Thanks for the link; I should probably get out Michael Jackson's Guide to Beer as I haven't looked at it in a while.

I don't drink the "macrobrews" for the very same reason you state. Busch has a "brewery" to the east of Houston and it looks just like all the other petro-chemical plants around it. If it didn't have the sign out front, you'd think it was producing chemicals or cracking oil!

I have probably had IPA in the past, but didn't know much about it, as I do like a good ale. Bass is now off-limits, though, after learning what "i'singlass" is It makes me wonder just how many of the ales are produced the same way.

I do have many Whole Foods nearby (I think Houston has at least four and all in areas I routinely visit) but the place I get my beers and ales is Spec's. They beat WF hands down for choice and price If you're ever in Houston, we'll to to the Spec's on Smith street, then Central Market, the big Whole Foods and finally Phoenicia Market Don't know what they have for beer, but it's a great place to find Middle Eastern ingredients and foods

Someday, I'll get into making my own. There's a brew-making supplier just a couple of miles from here. I'm finishing off a Newcastle Brown right now

Excellent find in Spec's, kentauros! I just took a peek at their beer selection - very nice.

Mind if I suggest a couple?

If you like IPA's, definitely check out Dogfish Head's 60 and 90 minute IPAs. Remi and I both prefer the 90 minute, but I think they're both worth trying. The 120 minute tastes like hop-water to me. Not that good, but worth a try some time anyway, if not only for the experience.

Victory Brewing's Hop Wallop & Hop Devil are also very tasty.

Also, Stone brewing's Arrogant ******* is a great balance of hops & malt. If you like that one, try Rogue's Dead Guy.

And if you like the beers that have a lot of both hops & malt, you might try Dogfish Head's Raison d'Etre. It is one of my all-time favorites.

I like to pick up something new at least 50% of the time I get some beer - I've been pleasantly surprised by most everything I've picked up.

That's quite interesting. Most of the type of beers I like they sare are meant to be served at "Cellar (12-14C/54-57F)". That's a bit warm for me on a hot day. I prefer around 4-5 C on a hot day home from the beach.

Ever heard of a beer belly? Probably not the greatest idea to be drinking lots of beer everyday for other reasons too tho IMHO....
