Becoming a vegetarian.

Well, for those of you that read my introduction post you will know that I've wanted to become veggie for a while now but I havn't had my parents support. Yesterday I printed out lots of information for them to read (which, they tell me they havn't actually read yet
but anyway) and we had a few arguments last night but I tried to be mature about it and get my points across and I think it worked.

Anyway, I came home from school today and my mum is suddenly really supportive of me! We were discussing what foods I (a few times she actually suggested her and dad try them too which I'm really happy about) could try, what meals I could make myself, how we could adapt our regular meals to become vegetarian, snacks I can try out, stuff for sandwiches etc..it was really good! I'm so happy that they're finally supporting me with this and are not against me anymore. I think mum might have actually read the information in the day and she has realised it is healthy and isn't going to make me ill if we do it properly.

I hope it's okay for me to post this but I don't really have anyone to tell. I've told my friends and they're happy for me but I need to tell everyone hehe. I'm off to look at recipes now and some yummy things we can try. Can anyone recommend some good cookbooks please? If there are any specifically aimed at teenagers that would be great, but otherwise anything is good. They are for my parents just as much as me - I know I can find recipes online (and I've found some really good ones) but I'd love a book too.

Oh, and my friend has made me happy. I'm doing something with her tomorrow after school and she offered to feed me. I accepted but asked if it would be okay for me to eat vegetarian or if it would be too much hassle I would wait until I got home and just bring something to snack on. She gladly agreed for us both (I don't mind whether people are eating meat around me, that's up to them and it's their decision) to eat veggie tomorrow, and I think that is really kind of her

One thing I'm dreading is telling my nannan and grandad. I know they are going to act badly but I'm proud of making this decision and I think I'll take some of my information I printed out with me so that they do not become worried about my diet. I'm willing to talk to my nannan about some foods which are easy for her to prepare so I can still eat there or I can take my own food with me if she prefers.

Eek, I wrote an essay! I just needed to tell people.

Thanks for reading if you've read it all.

Jane

Hi! I'm really glad your parents are being more supportive now! That makes it much easier (even when they are far away like mine are) I don't know about any cookbooks but Becoming Vegetarian is a great book for nutrition and general reference. It's got tons and tons of nutrtion info plus sections for people with special needs. The back portion has some good advice for dealing with meat eaters too.
Thank you - I will have a look for that book.

Congrats! Vegetables Rock is a good vegetarian book for teens.

That's great! You'd probably like "The Student's Vegetarian Cookbook", too - simple, cheap food that is easy to make.
Congrats. I didn't have any support for a while after turning vegetarian. It's good your mom supports you this early!

I'm glad it's working out for you!

I cooked when I was still living with my folks, but I've never really cared that much for fussing around in the kitchen- so I like recipes that are nutritious and easy. I don't have very many cookbooks, but I'd try borrowing them out of the library and if you like one a lot, maybe then purchase it.
Borrowing from the library is a good idea.

If you only like a couple, and it's not worth buying, you could always just copy those down into a notebook.

Thats what I did. I got practically every vegetarian cookbook in the library.
Congratulations, it sounds like you did an excellent job presenting your case. I hope that things continue to go smoothly for you.
Thank you everyone
I do appreciate it.

I think I will go to the library and have a look at what cookbooks they have and copy out some recipes I'd like to try. Everyone is now being really supportive of me which I'm really happy (and surprised!) and about

Congrats and welcome!!

As for recipes.. my moms friend lent me a book from the Moosewood Restaurant in Ithaca, NY. My book is really old. Probably early 80's haha But the restaurant is still up and running these days and sells even more books and has some recipes right online. It's like.. amazing and full of reallly good food. But some of them are complicated. For simple recipes get the Students Vegetarian Cookbook. Everything in it is really easy and doesn't take hardly anytime.

Ah, of course I saw a "vegetarian for teens"-type cookbook at Barnes & Noble last week, but I can't for the life of me remember the name of it!
It looked good though - I almost bought it... There is also a cookbook out there (I saw it on Amazon) from a Seattle restaurant called Cafe Flora - fantastic vegetarian and vegan recipes.

Congrats on getting your mom to support your decision - I think it helps that you're so well -informed about your decision and are able to articulate the "whys".
