BBQ Tofu

Category: Main Dishes - Other

Suitable for a: vegan diet

Ingredients:

------------------------------------------------------

1 14 oz. block of extra firm tofu, cut into 1/2-3/4" thick slices long ways

1 cup of barbeque sauce OR teriyaki sauce for marinade (I prefer teriyaki)

non stick cooking spray or oil for grill or baking sheet

Instructions:

Press the sliced tofu to remove most of the water (I put the slices between clean towels and put a baking sheet, cutting board or similar flat thing on top and put heavy stuff on top of that like canned tomatoes or juice for weight for about 20 minutes.) Then put your BBQ or teriyaki sauce of choice in a square container and put the slices in with the sauce turning to coat each piece. Marinate in the fridge for at least 30 minutes or even overnight turning the slices occasionally.

Fire up the grill after spraying with cooking spray or rubbing with oil, heat it up pretty hot, but not so hot it's smoking and put the slices on to grill. It only takes a minute or 2 on each side. You'll get grill marks on both sides and the flavor is sealed in and it should be somewhat chewy. Yum! You can also put these in the oven at 325 degrees on a baking sheet for 15 minutes or so turning once and that works well too.

You can try freezing the tofu, then thawing before slicing. It gives a more chewy texture. Serve with brown rice and grilled veggies.
