Just thought some of you might be interested in an article in this week's The New Yorker about in-vitro meat (the May 23 issue, it has lion statues on the cover.) It talks a lot about research being done into the topic in Netherlands, and explores reasons to believe in the project, beyond an animal rights perspective (though we veg*ns certainly get a mention.) I found it really interesting. Unfortunately I think you need to have a subscription to read online, but I'm sure you can browse an issue in a bookstore, your friends' house, etc...

Here's a link to the abstract

I'm completely behind on reading my New Yorkers. Perhaps I need to start with the newest issue first.

Oh, I have a stack of issues sitting at home too. I just happened to bring this new one to work with me, and I have lots of down time here.

I thought it was a very interesting article and hope they make good progress. I don't think I would eat the in-vitro meat though, just not a big fan of it, but it has great potential I guess.

I would probably not want to eat it either.

I'm going to have to give my head some time to absorb this topic, but I have a feeling this will be something you younger VBers will see in your lifetimes. Found a second article that explains it pretty well. Interesting stuff.

http://www.futurefood.org/in-vitro-meat/index_en.php

I'm glad it's getting more attention. Can't wait until it's a reality.

I don't know whether or not I'll eat in-vitro meat. Probably not, but I still hope it goes viral and becomes the cheapest source for fast food meat.

Viral? I hope not.
Tee hee.
I think in vitro meat has a lot of potential. Aside from the benefits to animals if lab-created meat became mainstream, it also seems like this kind of meat would be easier to keep safe. I mean, a lot of the contaminants in today's meat come from the intestines of the animal. But if there are no intestines, just muscles, it should have less e coli, for example. I would not eat it myself since I have lost a taste for flesh, but I would feed it to my cats and dogs. And I would happily buy it for friends and family members.
