Andre the turtle was rescued after being hit by boat propellers, and today he was released back into the ocean.

Lots of comments attached to the article - most of them positive, though the first one's a true nutjob. I added a veg*n perspective to the comments.

ETA: Less than 5 minutes later, the first response to my comment was from someone claiming to be vegan, arguing with me.

No one is replying to your inquiry, Fromper. I guess they don't want to have to face their own hypocrisy. Wonderful story, though.

Bad news. Just 3 weeks after his release back into the wild, Andre the turtle was found dead.

They aren't sure of the cause of death yet, but it wouldn't surprise me if spending a year being cared for, and having such major wounds that they slowed him down even after being healed as much as possible, resulted in him no longer being able to survive on his own. Given the extent of his injuries, they probably should have just let him live in the wildlife center for the rest of his life. For the year he was there, many people in the public saw him, and he served as a reminder that you have to watch out for wildlife when boating.

I would be in a major squee overload at that place! It looks awesome!!!

Sad about Andre, but what do you expect when an animal that's been in captivity so long gets released?
That's what worries me about freeing captive wildlife.

ETA: Oh, crap he was only in captivity for a year after he got hurt.
Maybe he wasn't ready. Or maybe there are too many damn boats!
