I've been drinking Caramel Macchiatos for a long time, but the other day my boyfriend told me that he's pretty sure that they're not vegan (w/ soy milk). He works at Dunkin Donuts and tells me that thiers are not, so now I'm kind of worried. I thought they were alright because the syrup they use isn't murky or anything, and if it contained dairy than I assume it would be. But then when I went to the website they described the sauce as "buttery", so maybe it's just the sauce they put on top that's not vegan. If that's the case then I'll just make sure to have them leave it off from now on, but I really hope that the drinks themselves are vegan I know some of you work at Starbucks, so hopefully you can let me know! Are there any other syrups/sauces used in the lattes that I should watch out for besides White Chocolate Mocha? Thanks!

Edit I'm also curious about the Toffee Nut Latte.

No. The caramel macchiatos are *not* vegan.

"Mark" on top?

What do you mean by a "mark" on your caramel sauce? I'd don't think I've ever seen macchiatto with caramel in it. Isn't it supposed to be an espresso with a dash of milk?

Nope, I think your thinking of an Espresso Macchiatto. A Caramel Macchiatto is basically a caramel latte with caramel sauce on top.

A normal macchiatto, yes. Why are normal macchiattos called "marks" then?

I think the idea is that the espresso is "marked" with foam. In the case of a caramel macchiatto, the cramel and foam mark a latte flavored with vanilla syrup.

My sister works at starbucks and said that the caramel syrup is vegan, just not the caramel sauce used for topping. So if you like the caramel macchiatto you could try a soy latte with a shot of vanilla and a shot of caramel.

Cafe macchiato means coffee stained (with milk) and is espresso with a small amount of milk. Latte macchiato means milk stained (with espresso) and is equal parts espresso and steamed milk, in other words a strong latte. "Macchiato" could be either.

There should be a little book/pamphlet in there telling you how to order, in steps, and what the words mean.

Lumos is correct.

At least in the greater Seattle-area Starbucks, the caramel SYRUP is vegan, it's just clear flavored syrup (filled with high-fructose corn syrup and all sorts of artificial goodies but vegan, nonetheless - even the "artificial butter flavoring" listed in the ingredients for the syrup is dairy free).

However the caramel SAUCE (like an ice-cream topping) is made with butter and it's NOT vegan.

They make the drink with the SYRUP and top it with the SAUCE.

Get a caramel latte with soy - basically the same thing, the taste/texture difference is minimal and it's vegan, if you're so worried about it.

Wow, my Starbucks people must not know what's going on then because they always use caramel syrup, not vanilla, when I order a caramel macchiatto. Haha... Honestly, I watch them, and you know how caramel syrup has a distinctive taste, yeah... I'll try ordering a latte with vanilla & caramel syrup and see how I like it. I like vanilla lattes and apparently I like caramel lattes, so it sounds like a good suggestion!

Sometimes I do order caramel lattes and they taste exactly the same to me, the macchiattos are just more candy-like because of the sauce. So that works. Thanks for the info!

I think you just pick it up after awhile. The first few times I went into a Starbucks I was scared to order because I didn't know what the hell anything was, but now everything's pretty familiar to me. Still confusing sometimes though, they really should make a little book to explain things, haha!

They do! They're at the counter, unless they've stopped making them.

But here's some stuff online... http://www.starbucks.com/retail/beve...p.asp?subcat=1

The manager at Starbucks told me that the caramel sauce is not vegan, it has dairy in it.

I order the cinnamon latte with soy milk. The cinnamon is a syrup. If you want caramel flavor.. get the syrup (caramel latte).
