I think this is the right place to put it...?

Anyway, I'm thinkin' about dreading my hair. I have somebody willing to help me, but I'm not 100% certain. I've read up a lot on them, so I think I know what I'm doing... a few hours of backcombing, then just let them do their thing. No wax or bands- maybe I'll tie them up for the first while when at school...

My biggest concerns are sleeping at night with them (are they comfy?), swimming with them (heavy...), and showering (everyone with dreads says they shower every few days, but I like to shower after work outs, so most days a week). Oh, and I'm scared of growing mold, haha

Anyway, anyone else considering getting them or have (had) them?

If you're not sure how to do them, I've heard it's worth it to actually have it professionally done. I've seen dread studios before, they're neat Also, if you like to shower a lot, just invest in a good large shower cap, and only wash your hair once a week or so. If you can't stand your hair being oily, I honestly can't see you enjoying having dreads for long

That was my first thought when I read this thread! It was by a girl named Jessica, but I don't remember her account name.

Sorry I'm also of no help, and I can't do a search at the moment because I'm leaving, but there are/were people who have/had them, any maybe some of them are still active and will show up.

Edit: Here is the thread I was talking about, but there are also a couple others that are older.

I have considered dreading my hair, but I am a) afraid of mold, b) worried about having to cut them off and having short hair (I love my long hair), and c) I work in a professional-ish job.

Good luck getting the info you need though, and post pics if you do it!

Thanks for all the comments everyone!
Should I try to revive that thread or just keep this one going?

I just hate being sweaty, so I woudn't be able to go to bed after a long workout
I should try to get a shower cap, but I think my hair would get pretty sweaty, too... I'll see what happens.

I'm afraid of mold, too... I would be devastated if my hair began smelling like our basement :S

Limes- Ehh, I'm too poor to get them done professionally XD
The person doing them though is really good with hair. She's been researching how to do them, too.

It's funny- I get really excited about them sometimes, and other times I just can't see the point in them. I guess I want to separate myself from the typical people at my school. I like the look a lot, and I never change my hairstyle, so I figure, why not?

I've been searching for my camera wire and just can't find it... Hopefully I will, and when I do, I'll upload pics

From what I've read, you can wash them as often as you like, it's the conditioner that you can't do.

Dreads are cool but for the love of god please at least try to keep them free of clutter as much as possible. LOL. I worked on an archaeological field crew back in the 90's with a guy who had dreads and insisted on sitting in the front seat of the company truck with the window rolled down. I had the misfortune of sitting behind him in the backseat and was afraid to open my mouth what with all the debris flying out of his hair and into my face. It was nasty business.

River- Pfftt, I don't even use conditioner as it is

Digger- Haha! Yeah, I am a little worried about dirt and stuff, but I'm going to keep them tied up and with a bandana when I'm hiking, backpacking, or gardening.

Just stop brushing/combing your hair and it will dread up naturally. Rip super chunky bits apart. Use a natural shampoo or soap bar. I washed about once a week or so. You can shower as often as you want, just try to keep your hair kinda dry or it will take ages to dry. I never had mold.

I recently shaved my head, cause due to children I got lice I couldn't get rid of. It's only hair right, it grows back!

I hate the idea of ripping my hair though... But I do love natural things..

I'm sure when I'm at a beach or pool, the sun will dry it up quickly, right? So that won't be a worry. I'll find a blow dryer.

Euuh, sorry about the lice. My sister's roommate in college just had lice, bleh! And that's what I tell my mom- dreads are not permanent, if I really, really don't like the way they feel, I can cut a few inches off and then sit there for hours combing the rest out. It's not damaging

I've got dreads that came naturally. I didn't really decide to get dreads, they just were a by-product of not being able to comb my hair for a couple of weeks due to a surgery. First I got just a couple, and then I decided to let nature take its course...

I wash my hair every day, but I make sure to squeeze out as much water as possible from my hair before air drying it.

Really cool

It took 2 1/2 hours for my sister and her friend to work on my hair (backcombing), but they look really cool, even though they're still "baby dreads".
I'm afraid of congos though... But I'll see how they go

I always thought dreads were cool and mean something personally to each person that has them. Even though I would never get them, I think it's a special thing for a lot of people.
