I was interested in knowing who among us practices yoga on a regular basis.

I'm curious to know who does yoga, where you do it, how long you've been doing it, what your practice consists of, and what goals you might have, and why you do it.

Me: I have been doing two beginner tapes (the AM/PM yoga tapes with Rodney Yee & Suzanne Deason) for several months now. I don't do it consistently enough, anywhere from 2 to 6 times a week. Basically I do it whenever the mood strikes me or I have some free time.

My goals are to start doing longer sessions (the beginner tapes I have now are only 20 minutes each) and I'd also like to start doing a little Power yoga (I have one of the Rodney Yee tapes for that). I do it for stress relief, flexibility & toning, and because it really helps to keep me centered. I really want to step up and start a consistent routine of it.

I have never done yoga, but am very interested in learning more about it. If I can drag my but out of bed a little earlier, I'd love to be able to do yoga in the morning to start my day with a clear head. Any suggestions as requested by spa_girl would be greatly appreciated!

I do yoga once a week and take one Pilates class and teach one Pilates class a week.

Our yoga class is done in this wonderful room that is across the street from the Chesapeake Bay. We have these HUGE windows that looks at the water and it's just so peaceful and fun! Our instructor is just so funny and such a warm and helpful individual! I love him to death! He teaches a little Hatha and Ashtanga yoga. It's great and also very hard.......but leaves you feeling like you have just had the most wonderful massage in your life!

I started doing class this past January. I have always been a workout junkie (i.e. fitness competitor; runner and fitness instructor). Well, this past Jan. I found out I had cervical cancer - Stage 1. All they did was remove the cancer, but I must return every 6 months for follow ups. I was so stressed out that I figured I would try yoga to see if it would calm me down! Not only did it help me relax and find peace within myself - it's a great workout. I know I have my instructor to thank for this.......along with my friends who talked me into going to class. I can only speak for myself, but this has been the one thing that has helped me get through this really tough time.

I would looove to get into yoga. As of right now, I run about 3 times a week, walk my dogs about 2, and am in an aerobics class...that is ending at the end of my semester if just 2 days I used to do pilates and will probably start doing it again now that I won't have class. I would love to actually do a yoga class, but I think it'd be better if I just began on my own...to get comfortable. ANYWAYS, my question is any suggestions for good tapes? what would you recommend for an 18 yr. old, averagely flexible??

I'm a yogi! i've been practicing yoga for twelve years. Currently I practice five or six days a week for about an hour to an hour and a half.

I "do" yoga in order to open myself physically and spiritually. Also, to invite balance, strength, and focus into my life... and I like the way it makes my butt, shoulders, and stomach look.

I've done a few blocks of classes here and there and now I work from a book. I have ME (or CFS or CFIDS depending on where you live) so it's one of very few forms of exercise I can do. I don't do it very regularly at te moment though, need to get into a routine. I love it, it's soooo relaxing.

I would advise if you're a beginner to go to at least a couple of classes. It really helps with the breathing and making sure you're in exactly the right posture. Then you could carry on on your own.

I love yoga, I'm a self-confessed addict. I just recently got back from a 3 day yoga retreat actually, was terrific.

I don't take any classes, but I do have a yoga DVD I do about every day or every other day. It's really helped my back pain, and I can tell if it's been a few days since I've done the DVD. It's the Living Arts yoga for weight loss ( I'm not using it to loose weight, I bought it pre-owned). I love it, it's really making my thighs shapely. My mother-in-law got my 3 yr old son a Yoga Kids video. He had a lot of fun with that!

I've been doing yoga for about 5 years. I used to take classes but they are hard to find in my rural area. I now practice 2-3 times a week with a tape or on my own with some soothing music. The tape I have is intermediate I guess. It's called Power Yoga: Yoga for strength and endurance by Yoga Zone.

For beginners, I also highly recommend a class at least until you learn the proper poses. Going to one class a week and then practicing on your own 2-3 more times a week would be ideal.

I do it for the calm it brings and to improve my flexibility and endurance.

I try to do yoga at least once a week. I have several yoga videos that I use because yoga classes would be very expensive on top of my regular gym membership. I really enjoy it - yoga makes me feel much more calm and relaxed. Plus since I sit scrunched over a computer all day at work - yoga really has helped my back. I have considered branching out to pilates but I haven't yet.

For those who expressed interest in getting started, I really like www.livingarts.com. They have a ton of videos/DVD's/books that you can purchase there. I think the Rodney Yee AM Beginner's Yoga is a really great introduction (and it's pretty cheap, too). Not difficult, and he explains a lot about posture and breathing. But taking maybe one class first would be a good idea, then the tapes.

I love yoga. :) I'm buying Yee's intermediate tape next and can't wait.

I take a yoga class on Mondays and Fridays. I also just got a Rodney Yee Yoga AM and Yoga PM CD, but I haven't tried it yet. The class is about 45 minutes long and my CD is 2 20 minute sessions.

My daughter(7) and I are huge yoga addicts. ive been doing it about 4 years. I love it and honestly do around 1 1/2 to 2 hours a day. Thats with the 1/2 hour meditation included. My daughter does around half an hour. My 4 year old has just started doing it and his attention span is a bit less so he maybe lasts 10 -20 minutes. my oldest(10) just laughs at us :s (Hes a hockey player and much to macho for erm yoga. Ill keep workin on him tho)

I do yoga. I am also very interested in the philosophy behind yoga and have read several books (most recently a book of essays from people who practice yoga to varying extents called "How We Live Our Yoga", which was very good). I am I would say a beginner. I started practicing by myself last fall and fell in love. I now have several books and would love to some day have the dough on hand to take a class. I do about a half hour-one hour of yoga every evening. It always makes me feel good about myself. Always.

i also practice yoga. i generally practice vinyasa yoga--astanga and power vinyasa yoga--combined with my own, intuitive practice. i tend to practice every day from 1 hour to 3 hours each day. i love to practice yoga.

currently, i try to get to at least 2 classes per week, but it's been tough lately. I also teach yoga full time, and everyone teaches when i do so that makes it difficult.

i've been practicing yoga my whole life, much like systmdwngrl's children. we practiced every day for about an hour--but nothing formal, more like play time. when i went to college, i found two yoga teachers, and started practicing with them 3-4 times a week. i graduated from college, was on my own for a year, then started power yoga and astanga yoga with another teacher. Practiced there for three years, got my teaching certification from him, and i've been teaching professionally for the last year. I love it.

i am looking to start my own studio in a few months. i'm setting up my business plan and in talks with a chiropractor who is adding another office to his practice, adding a weight loss center to it, a priavet gym and pilates studio as well. So, add in yoga center and spa (friend of mine is insterested in starting a spa), and it should be a pretty nice place.

For beginners, i highly recommend classes. And they're not always expensive. most yoga teachers/studios will gladly trade work for classes--cleaning the studio, administrative stuff, and so on. So, a little bit of work gets you free classes. Yay!

I do it all the time.

Be well and happy!

I have a yoga book and I really need to pick up my practice. I've read a lot on yoga and done it a good deal, but recently I've fallen out of it, spending more time pounding the treadmill....I'm just generally somewhat pressed for time, except when 9:00 rolls around, and then I just feel like lazying around. Nonetheless, I feel motivated! I am thinking maybe I should get a movie. Can anyone recommend a good yoga movie to get me started?

i think one of the best ways to get started on a daily practice is to do it first thing in the morning. literally, first thing.

put your yoga mat (or some other indicator like a yoga blanket, rug, or towel) right next to your bed where you get out so that the first thing that you step on in the morning is your yoga mat. as soon as you step on it, get into child's pose or downward facing dog.

i like this AM sequence, which only takes 10 minutes, but gets you into the habit of doing yoga every morning:

child's pose

downward facing dog

cat/dog tilts

downward facing dog with right leg extended up and back; repeat on other leg.

lunge the right foot forward (between the hands)

back to downward dog

lunge left foot forward (between the hands)

walk right foot up to left foot--rag doll

sweep up to mountain pose--reaching over head.

hands to heart center

if you'd like, OM 3 times. this can take anywhere from 5 minutes to 10 minutes--longer if you'd like.

as you begin to do this every day, in a few weeks you'll find that you want to do more poses, so throw in 2 or 3 that you really like and 2 or 3 that you dislike so that you can work on them and improve.

i love yoga. have a lot of tapes, but a lack of a private place to do them, sadly. i try to go to yoga class at least weekly but appointments and such keep getting in the way. some happy news- a new yoga studio just opened, a 5 minute walk from my therapists office. i was going to check it out today but i have some kind of virus, so i suppose the suspense will have to continue.
