I fell in love with RenFaire in Tuxedo, NY, last year over Labor Day. Kind of funny how it happened, too. I found a gorgeous royal Rennaisance dress for $2 at a garage sale, and naturally I wanted to wear it somewhere. One of my friends was in grad school in Nyack, so I drove out to visit her and go to the RenFaire together.

I have a picture around here somewhere. My dress is really heavy. It's purple velvet with sleeves that widen to nearly three feet across. I wore two crinolines under it, flower pins in my hair, and a medieval crucifix necklace. (Oddly enough, the necklace was made in Israel.)

Because of this thread, I got to looking around the net and found a Ren Faire this weekend that's an hour and a half from me.
I totally want to go and snag a friend or two. It's free admission, too! Gas and a packed lunch is all it would cost.... my oh my.

womens fashion was so much more flattering back then. but complicated.

our company just got comped tickets for the PA renn fest, because we made such a impression on the manager last time. yay!

Hmm. I'm not sure I agree. Some outfits, yes, were much more flattering. Others would be uncomfy for me to wearthe ones where the cleavage is just all hanging out there. My renfaire dress is perfect for me square neckline, perfect fit, great lines to accentuate the best parts of my figure. I think it was made at a theater costume shop.

And men in tight pants. Oh yes.

I've never been to a RennFaire, and I think that SCA geeks are, well, SCA geeks... :p

However, as a Shakespeare enthusiast, I do have to say, I love the costumes, and should have a more open mind about the rest of it...

<<---- has met far too many annoying SCA geeks...
I think we should dress like that every day! It would transform Casual Friday!
The PA Ren Faire is awesome! I have good memories of going there on field trips in middle school.. the improv shows were always really funny.
I'M GOING TO REN FAIRE ON SATURDAY!!! My friend who was in NY last year and went to the Tuxedo Ren Faire with me is back in town, and she's very excited about the SE Ohio Ren Faire. Hey, it's more notice than I had for the last Ren Faire. Last year I heard about it on a Wednesday, got a few extra days off work (nursing home) and drove out Friday. This time I have a whole five days to plan it.

Now I won't be able to think about work today, envisioning a certain person I know, wearing a kilt. If only there were a way to get him to go to Ren Faire with us on Saturday... Won't happen unless I happen to see him Friday, and he's game.

I'm not too involved with any of that anymore, though. It's too bad, I always had a lot of fun. I could never work at a RennFaire. I'm terrible at improvising. I can hardly do the alternate identity thing with the SCA, and that's not even hard.
acting is reacting, my coach told me.

randy, i thought you'd be all over it. I wish you lived closer, I need acting help!

Ok, so yesterday I spent an hour online trying to figure out which SCA group is in my area. No luck. Then, today as I'm working on a preview story about some small community festival, I find out there's to be some kind of medieval reenactment at the festival, but the organizer didn't know much about it. When I called the number she gave me, I found myself talking to the main contact person for the local SCA.

It was funnyhe slowed down and said, "The group we're part of is the Society... of... Cr-"

"Creative Anacronism?" I jumped in. Yes, Virginia, there is a SCA in your area.

hear, hear and huzzah. If you are sitting in Golden Corral, the freaking bad fake accent can go!

as we said at Waxhachie, "damn, dude, the beer's in the pickup truck."

and I don't care if you are a Laurel. I have a life.

I don't understand what you are talking about in this post. can you elaborate?
I took my kids to the Ren Faire and we loved it! At first I was thinking it was a bit weird (which I like anyway!), but very quickly we really began to enjoy it and the kids even got a sword fighting lesson from a "knight" that just earned the title as the best sword fighter in Europe- Pretty cool! I think we might be hooked on these faires now. I know I'll go again as soon as I get a chance!
<------Yet another SCA geek. I haven't played in a long time though. Too many mundane annoyances like working and spending time with my kids have been getting in the way.
Not into SCA or Ren Faires exactly, but I am, by profession, a Renaissance and baroque string instrument specialist. I play several string instruments from the period. I also sing. I usually don't dress up to do this, though!
