Hi.........This is all very new to me. This journey started out with DH and I deciding to buy a farm when we retire (a couple years away!). Being the information junkie that I am, I would look up different animals that we could possibly have on our farm. I was surprised to read on some of the forums about the personalities that chickens have. Someone posted pictures of the chickens roosting in trees, on her porch...and one made her home in a brown paper bag. Then I saw a video on a goat being born!! Amazing!! The next video had the baby goats jumping all over the yard like their little legs were pogo sticks! Now this is where I am a little fuzzy, but, somehow I made it to a veggie forum that directed me to Peta. I had NO IDEA what Peta was. The video that showed up on my screen was "Meet your Meat!" I could not believe my eyes!! It was hard to keep from crying. I spent the better part of the weekend trying to talk to someone about it. My husband did not want to hear. Not because of indifference, but because he finds it too heartbreaking. When I said I didn't want to eat meat, he said "I'm with you."

I still want to "talk" about it......sort of like "Hey, this is too crazy, you will never believe this!", but I don't know how it will be received. So, I am grateful to have found this forum. I didn't eat meat for about 4 days and felt great. The aches and pains in my joints were less???? The woman at the healthfood store suggested I do this gradually, so I had some tonight, now I feel all achy! Don't feel very good about having eaten it either...so, how do I do this??

Anyhow, so much for my "book" (sorry about the length of this post). I am so glad that I found this forum!!

Welcome Karen to VB!

Have you read the Tip of the Day Thread yet? It's in this forum. It has lots of good information about how to maintain a vegetarian diet. Whether you wean yourself of meat gradually or go "cold tofurkey", as we say here on VB, you'll want to know how manage meals without missing the meat. (Oops, sorry for the alliteration!) We also have lots of recipes you can check out, from easy to gourmet.

Good luck with your new diet!

Hi and welcome! I'm a newbie too.

I cannot bring myself to watch this video, though I'm tempted at times. I know I'll get way too emotional. It breaks my heart. I once visited a small county fair in WI, where they entered and judged pigs for prizes. Later that night I visited the tent where the pigs were and they had a few owners and their children still there. I spoke to the mom a little. She said this was the final night and the kids wanted to spend some time with their pigs. The next day they were all being shipped off to slaughter...whether they won or not! It was a "requirement" of the competition. I started crying right there. These children pamper and care for these animals and the animals do grow to trust them.....then they get shipped off to slaughter. I'm sorry, it's not right. It's reality...but it's not right. They should have the option of NOT sending their pigs to their death. I could've never been in FFA. I would've raised ten kinds of **** before I'd let them take my animal to slaughter.

This is why I'm surprised it took me so long to become vegetarian (pushing towards vegan). But I'm glad I have and I'll never turn back. But I still can't watch that video.

I would love to own a farm. All my animals would grow to live to a ripe old age and well cared for!!

Thanks for the "welcomes."

Gypsysoul....I know what you mean. My DH had suggested to me that I have found my new passion.....but I know to hear of the abuses daily would emotionally wreck me. He's saying "oh, you could write letters, you could......" on and on, but it would just do me in. I have already fought my battles. I would more like to be on the other end of it. Would like to take the animal to live with us. Who knows??? perhaps at some point I would get into the letter-writing, etc.

The property we are looking for would be about 100 acres, and part of that would be rented out. So, I am sure we would have room for some "needy friends."

Actually though, I am glad that I watched the videos, cause now I can relate what is happening. I also saw the ones about ducks and "fois gras" and was able to tell my son about it. I think the more people that KNOW about it, the better. I think people just do not know! But, they will now!! I just have to be so careful about how I bring it up.

Hmmmmmmmmmm...this is now the FIRST sight I check when I get up...I think I am hooked!!

Let me know if you are interested in seeing the baby goats video, and I will see if I can find it.

Have a GREAT day!!
