A carriage horse collapsed today at 59th St. near FAO Schwartz - sometime after 4PM. This picture was sent to me by someone who was in a car just behind the fallen horse. The Win Animal Rights demo against the carriage horse trade was going on at the time and activists were there to document the entire horrific incident. I hear that the horse got up and appears to be OK.

Wow, that made me INCREDIBLY angry and sad, I actually sobbed like a little girl.

The best thing we can do is spread this around, I have a few people from NYC on my Facebook so I shared it there and I'll post it a few other places

There is something seriously wrong with this.

"Mayor Michael Bloomberg supports the horse drawn carriage industry citing that many of the draft type horses used are rescued from rural farms where they previously plowed fields or were used as buggy horses and were no longer wanted or needed by their owners. The horses had been turned into local auctions to be sold. Many of the draft-type work horses are used as carriage horses, many are purchased by horse rescues and adopted out, and many are purchased for slaughter; sent to Canada and Mexico where they are killed and their meat sold for human consumption. Mayor Bloomberg argues that most of the horses wouldn't be alive if not for the carriage industry.

Luke has been reported as fine and is working again. He had been suspended pending a veterinarian examination. He now wears a kicking strap to prevent him from bucking and getting himself caught up in the carriage shaft".

This is really upsetting. Almost as bad as when I saw a race horse go down after getting injured coming around the final dangerous tight turn at the Maryland State Fair race track. I did cry that day. They look so helpless and terrified when they are down like that yet they are gentle and trusting.

I'm at least thankful for the guy who was trying to calm him.
