Can somebody help me out with a problem? My uncle asked me if I like lamb. I told him that I don't. He replied,"Yes,you do". Then, he starts cooking lamb and asking me if I want some. "It's not going to hurrrrt yoooou",he says. His girlfriend asks me if I want some lamb and I say no(she knows very well that I'm a veggie). How do I tell my uncle to get off my back?

Gosh, what a jerk.

He musn't understand how you feel about not eating meats.

I'd calmly explain to him why you are a vegetarian and tell him it's no joke. Like, say it in a serious tone. That should make him stop, if he's nice.

Hi there...

If I had someone treated me like that, the next time s/he asked me, I'd say, "You know very well I'm vegetarian. Are you a jackass, or are you simply a dumbass who doesn't have a clue of what 'vegetarian' means?" I'd say it in a very serious tone.

I know I know, it's harsh. But some omnis just wouldn't leave people like us alone. Not so long ago I was being bashed for wanting to find mock meat (in another forum). I was told that if I loved animals, I shouldn't be wanting to eat any kinds of "meat", even the ones made out of seitan/tofu!

Reminds me of the line from My Big Fat Greek Wedding: "You dont eat no meat? Its ok....I make lamb."

See...lamb is vegetarian.

Seriously, be firm with your uncle and let him know that you do not eat meat and that you wish that he would respect your choices and your beliefs. Good luck.

I doubt all the talking and niceness in the world will sway someone like that...

Can you just walk away? Refuse to eat at their table if they're going to tease you? Not hang around them?

If the above aren't options I would say what I needed to say VERY firmly, but just once! and then totally ignore them.

It's definitly worked for people I have to deal with...

do you think he's saying it out of spite, or out of concern for your health?

if concern, maybe he doesn't have the information or tools he needs to accept your choices?

if spite, tell him to bugger off. errr.. i mean.. lead by example.

My sister does stuff like that to me constantly! She called me up one day and in a very rude tone said "Im sitting on my new leather couch! And I had steak fajitas for dinner! Do you like steak?" She knows I dont eat it. I think people try to get a rise out of me. I have learned to pretend it doesnt bother me, and then it seems to stop with most people. My sister also says that she eats two servings of meat with every meal to make up for the meat that I dont eat. Shes mean, I ignore her!
