I found this question on Yahoo Answers:

Quote:
Male and female vegetarians? What percentage of vegetarians in the US are male? I am looking for some reliable statistics.
And the supposed "best" answer:

I understand 40% at last report. IMO, they are "males" in name only.
Blows my mind how ignorant people are. Vegan or near-vegan vegetarianism can prevent or even reverse erectile dysfunction; yet, supposedly it's not masculine. A health-based veg diet can support a man extremely well in an active lifestyle. If you want to be athletic and build strength and vitality, healthy vegetarianism is a great companion to a quality exercise program. That's how I live. Of course, you could junk all this and eat lots of meat and be obese with heart disease and a penis that barely works in order to avoid being a wimpy vegetarian man. Okay, I've seen the light. I'm doing that.

I don't know where the supposed masculinity of meat eating comes from. Maybe it's an old tribal thing of the hunters in the tribe being of high value since they risked their lives to bring in food. However, most men don't hunt their own meat. Even the ones that do don't risk their lives (unless they're hunting with Dick Cheney). I actually do have more respect for meat eaters who hunt their own meat because at least they have some understanding of where it comes from.

On the plus side, 6 people voted that answer thumbs down while only two gave it thumbs up. I made it 7 thumbs down. If you have a Yahoo account, you can go there and give it more thumbs down:

On the positive side, I just had a first date with a vegetarian woman who seemed very relieved that she wasn't going to have to listen to the same lame jokes like, "I didn't fight my way to the top of the food chain to ..." blah blah blah, you know the rest or "Wuh huh-huh-huh, if God didn't want us to eat meat, he wouldn't've made them thar animals ... " babble babble babble, complete the cliche. She said the last guy she dated tried to impress her by talking incessantly about the barbecue he did on his grill and how she was missing out. She chose to do without his big belly and Viagra-dependent erections.

Now that's funny!

My hubby went to the Dr the other day and she told him he needs to go on a diet (duh, he had to go to the Dr to get that info when I've been telling him the same thing for free the last couple years!) Frist thing she told him was he had to start restricting his meat intake to 5 oz or less a day. I really do like this Dr.

Lol. One of the top vegan/vegetarian contributors is someone who goes thread to thread directing homosexual insults towards herbivorous men
It's sad watching people get ticked off with the ignorance. The guy's at home on a Friday night insulting people on the internet. Why do people care what he thinks?

That's what I think! It's really insulting to both genders when you think about it, I take offense to the idea of caring about the world around you being a "chick thing"

I think there are enough super hot muscular male veg*n's out there to eventually dispel these ridiculous notions about cruelty being tied to masculinity. I'm not a Mike Tyson fan by any means but the fact that he's apparently vegan now is delightful to me since he's so physically big and well known, he makes a good example for the general public. That guy could easily pick me up and hurl me across the room and he's all plant powered, just awesome

i haven't run across anyone saying "you're not much of a man if you don't eat meat". i have, however, noticed that physicians recommending vegan diets avoid the use of the label "vegan" like the plague, because the general public has a negative image of vegans. the media has done a disservice here.

i really don't believe there is another healthy way to eat, and i could give a rat's behind what people who eat meat think. well, that's not entirely true. i try to get them to understand what meat does to their vascular system, so they quit eating it.

Brad Pitt is a vegetarian. There are probably a few women who find him attractive.

I grew up in a small town in Texas. There cruelty was definitely considered masculine. The idea of being a man was to not take any lip from anyone and to be tough enough to beat the crap out of anyone who insulted you or whom you didn't like. I wasn't vegetarian back then, but if I had been I guarantee you I would have taken ssssooooo much crap about it. Those ideas about manhood are just plain dumb. In fact, they're a great way to end up in prison (and some of my former classmates did just that).

I've redefined what I think masculinity is. I think it's a weak man who bullies people or who is hateful. A real man abhors violence and would use it only as a last resort such as in self defense or in defense of another. I think a man builds himself up by making himself healthy via diet and exercise, and a health-oriented vegan diet is as good as it gets. He also builds himself up intellectually. I think a man takes care of the people he loves, whether they're family or friends. He's active and pursues making good things happen, both for himself and others.

That's what I think masculinity is. Anyone who thinks they're something wrong with my not bullying others is pathetic. And meat is the ultimate product of bullying. It's the result of senseless cruelty toward animals who are completely defenseless. To be a part of that is to be weak and sad.

A REAL man, to me, is someone who is strong physically and mentally, who can think for himself, and make his own decisions, and when one of those decisions goes against his societal norm, has the guts to stand up for what he thinks is right.

The vast majority of men who go along with meat eating because 'every else does it' and 'that's what real men do' are spineless, thoughtless and mentally weak, and any man who thinks that it is clever to go on and on about how eating meat makes you more manly (especially when they choose to buy that meat in a supermarket, killed, prepared and sanatised for them) is a dickhead. IMHO.

Let's here it for all the male veg*ns in the world who are standing up against their societies beliefs
Just know that YOU are the strong ones.
