Animal Rights Leader Wants to Be Barbecued

Fri Apr 25, 9:15 AM ET

By Francois Murphy

LONDON (Reuters) - The leader of a prominent U.S.-based animal rights group said she had drawn up a will directing that her flesh be barbecued and her skin used to make leather products in protest at man's ill-treatment of animals.

Ingrid Newkirk, 53, president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), said on Thursday she had chosen to donate her body to her organization for use in a variety of startling protests.

Newkirk also suggested her feet be removed and made into umbrella stands similar to those made from elephant feet that she had seen as a child.

"I want to find ways to have my work live on when I'm gone and this has been my first idea. I will make a stir when I am long in the ground," Newkirk told Reuters.

A PETA spokesman said Newkirk held British and U.S. citizenship and a copy of her will would be kept in both countries.

In the document she also suggests her liver be vacuum-packed and sent to France to be used in a campaign to persuade shoppers not to buy foie gras, made from the livers of force-fed ducks and geese.

"We are in the business of getting people to think about what happens to animals," she said.

"When they go to the grocery store and buy foie gras in a tin, there is absolutely no thought of the geese. If my liver makes people talk about the issues then some good will come of it."

Newkirk said she had not heard of anyone making similar arrangements in their will.

"We hope it will start a trend," she said, adding that she had received a letter from a person interested in using their remains to promote vegetarianism.

But one body part listed in the will is not protest or animal related. It says a small part of her heart should be buried near the Hockenheim Formula One racing circuit in Germany, preferably near the Ferrari pits.

"I love Formula One. I love Michael Schumacher, and I thought I would have a little bit of personal indulgence there," she said. "But it's not without a connection to animals because he actually signed a letter for us against experiments on monkeys in Germany."

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmp...d_animals_dc_1

The reporting, if you can call it that, is picked up from that New Yorker piece from a week or so ago. Worth picking up a copy, if you ask me.

That is so radical. It sounds so creepy; yet the thought of it done to animals continuously doesn't bother...

How desensitized we are.

It's sad that the only way to get people to listen is to be as sensationalistic/controversial as possible It's not enough, the cruelty.

they BBQed a guy in the movie "Fried Green Tomatoes".

If she's 53 now, I think when she dies her meat would be kind of tough and stringy, I don't think it would taste too good.

i think she's silly to do this. it's going to attract more negative attention towards veg*n's rather than make people think about what they're eating.

The amount of people that's she's trying to catch the attention of, I highly doubt most of them will then say "ugh, that's what I really eat when I eat meat??", but instead they'll be saying "what a weirdo"

I think that PETA could change the negative comments about them easily. Just think - If they actually spent their money on rescuing cats dogs, pigeopns and whatever else needs help, and became an organisation that actually helped animals directly, I'd give them credit.

But of course, until PETA actually come to their senses, I'mn o going to bother giving them any credit.

You have access to their financial records and expenditure details? Or was that in the 7% of the article you read, and if so could you please point it out to me?

And throughout all this whining about PETA, what are you doing?

that's because the majority of the people on this board are anti-peta, and the news media is anti-peta, so of course that's all you're going to hear about.

Considering Ingrid refers to PETA as "media whores" I don't think the blame for that can lie completely on the media.

Back to the topic, you can read PETA's report on the will here:

http://www.peta.org/feat/newkirk/

and you can read Newkirk's entire will and testament here:

http://www.peta.org/feat/newkirk/will.html

They say BBQed, but who would *ever* eat her? I guess it'd be more ethical than eating an animal, because this was her wish, but jeez. Eating people isn't good.
