Ethical reasons. Not really reasons of compassion, but an ethical stance I came to through a process of consideration (I was writing an analysis of a related subject). I found the case for animal rights so compelling (and the case for meat eating so weak) that nothing else motivated my decision. I was completely apathetic to the nutritional issues involved and only looked into creating a healthy diet after I had stopped eating animal products. The environmental issue wasn't even on my radar.

Knowing what I know now, I would never go vegan for either environmental or nutritional reasons.

Like you, I read alot and began to research. After watching several family members suffer and/ or die of diet-related illnesses, I realized that I had more of a choice as to whether I would live a long (or longer) more or less healthy life. Observing, understanding, and then going on the path to eliminate bad things from my diet became very important to me. I am not just a vegetarian, but a "health" vegetarian, which means no oils, highly processed foods, or simple sugars either.
