So I'm in the Walmart with a couple of friends here in my America's Heartland college town when one of them wants to check out the knives and guns. Just because. SO anyway while he's doing that me and my other friend are watching this television they've got up next to the counter. There's a guy up in a tree with a crossbow waiting for a deer. One arrives and I'm so sure he's not gonna hit it. I mean this is the middle of the store, they can't show that. So he pulls back the arrow, I, again am so sure he misses or that they cut away. But NO. He hits the deer and it runs off into the forest and I hope it's ok. Next scene they've got night vision and he's looking for the deer. He finds it. Its dead. Then he kneels down next to it, picks up his head and starts SHAKING IT TOWARDS THE CAMERA. It as so nasty because you could tell its neck was broken and he's just saying how beautiful it is and playing with it. I was like what the hel-l??? So disgusting!!! Shouldn't just showing something like that in a public store be illegal?

There are a lot of shows like that on TV, sadly. Hunting programs and commercials make up a good chunk of the programming on the cable channel OLN. They also sometimes show hunting shows on the various ESPN channels. In addition, local affiliates in rural areas (like mine) also broadcast hunting and fishing shows as "filler" in the daytime hours.

When I was in college, my mom and I would occasionally get together at a sports-themed restaurant in the area. Every time we were in there, they would be broadcasting a hunting show on at least one of the big-screen TVs. I was so disgusted I said I didn't want to go anymore.

My gym also used to have hunting shows on at least one of the multiple TVs almost all the time. Now that more teen girls are working there, thankfully I'm not seeing the hunting stuff as much anymore. Now it's typically soaps, cooking shows, or Animal Planet when they are working.

Hunting isn't illegal so why should showing a video of people doing something legal be illegal?

What did the store manager say when you brought it to his/her attention?

I'm kind of surprised that everyone is so shocked by this. It's Wal-Mart for one, and it's the hunting department. Do I think they should show that stuff out in the open? Of course not. And I keep my kids away from stuff like that. But as stated above, it's a legal activity and you were in the hunting department. So it's really easy to keep from being in that situation again.

Well, yeah, I know. But I was just surprised that it was shown in the store seeing as how it was sensitive material. I mean, alcohol is legal too and they don't show Girls Gone Wild ads in that area. Even less extreme, they don't decide to show the sports channel in that department- and that actually makes sense. It just seemed really unneccessary.

Quote:

Hunting shows in the hunting Dept? I do not shop at Walmart but somehow this doesn't suprise me. Is it a Super Walmart? If so you should suggest they show their clothing factories in the clothing dept, and slaughter videos in the meat dept.

No,it really doesn't surprise me at all.Especially since my Walmart is in a redneck area.Hunting is a way of life here in the South.I usually try my best to avoid going near the hunting dept.,but for some reason on that day I just stopped

and couldn't tear my eyes away from what I saw.I just stood there thinking

"what is going on in this guy's head?"

I'm sorry, but a dead deer IS a beautiful animal. And it will stay beautiful for a number of hours, after which it will start to appear awfully disgusting. Now, if had remained alive, it would stay beautiful for years!

I like that suggestion. You know showing hunting videos may have the opposite effect, some potential hunters may be turned off from hunting.

Anyways, I'm not big on "protecting" children from reality. I don't like how children are "protected" from some selected forms of violence and sexuality.

Like others said it's in the hunting section and if one prefers ones' child not see, then don't go into the hunting section. If one is shopping there, it's probably safe to assume the child is exposed to real hunting so a video about hunting isn't a big deal.

Before your read the rest of my post i want everyone to understand one thing.... I AM NOT HERE TO CAUSE PROBLEMS!!!! i Hunt and i fish and i am damn proud of it! however im not here to tell you your crazy, or that your wrong, or that you need to change your ways. im sure you all have an opinion thats differt from mine, i dont want trouble!

The reason im here is because of a comment that was made by a woman at work twards myself and another coworker... I do not hunt deer, the sole reason is that i myself dont have the freezer space, thought i love venison there is no way my roomie and i would be able to consume that meat in a reasonable amount time let alone store it. I do however know how to hunt deer, when i lived at home i did it every year. so I took my coworker out bowhunting, we harvested one buck and one doe, we brought pictures to work to share our story. while we were sharing with another coworker a woman aproached and verbaly assulted us for killing one of gods "beutifull animals". i was informed that i was a horrible siner doomed to hell.

this whole situation got me thinking about the other side of the fence, her side, so here and im feeding my curousity wondering what vegans are all about.

now the guy i took hunting is 24, he has a wife and twins, we work for UPS loading trucks and dont make all that much money, i know the venison will be a great blessing for their family.

all of this being said, why do you find harvesting a dear for the meat so repulsive?

this man borrowed a bow from me, after all is said and done he has enough meat to fead his family for months at the cost of a couple licenses and a bit gas. I see no horror in this, do you? why?

Most of the shows on tv do not display a true sportsman, i have been taught from the day i was born to harvest older animals, not the young ones, use as much of your harvest as possible and always wait for the drop shot (one shot instant kill)

These men you see on tv who stomp around in the woods in search of a the biggest buck to shoot so that they have somthing to brag about are not sportsman, there nothing but a sad excuse for a human. i found the carcass of mature buck in the woods 2 weeks ago, the head had been cut off, i assume the person who shot it did so only to mount the head, i find this discusting as im sure you do.

i dont take pleasure in killing.... i take pleasure wandering around in the woods enjoying my surroundings, will i harvest an animal, maybe, but even if i dont, i will still have a good time...

once again, i dont want any trouble, im only here to lern...
