The_Gazumper, it all depends on what your style is. The most recommended first one I've heard is Dilate or Not a Pretty Girl. Myself, I started out on Little Plastic Castle and Living in Clip. If you like acoustic guitar and a voice, then go with Ani Difranco- Ani Difranco or Not So Soft. Uh, if jazzy is your thing go with newer albums (Revelling/Reckoning or Evolve). If you like more of a rocker sound then Dilate or Not a Pretty Girl. I saw her originally in '97 with Bob Dylan, but I didn't really get into her until about 3 years ago. Go to www.righteousbabe.com and you can listen to some of the new songs (click on the picture of the new album on the first page.) Good luck!!!!

The Dylan/Difranco concert was weird. In '97 no one knew about her, so it was mainly a bunch of stompy booted angry lesbians for her to open... Now, you mix in a bunch of motorcycle drivin', beer drinkin' Dylan fans with these cute little angry lesbain girls... well, lets just say there was a lot of hostility in the crowd. But all the Difranco fans left after she was finished. She was in beautiful form with Sara Lee and Andy. She had the short dyed blonde hair, and was looking cuter than ever. Great performance! I'm seeing her Saturday... I am squirming in my seat! TOOOOO EXCITED!!!!

Hehe, I like the Capt. Obvious! I'd be sad, too! I stood on the street 7 months pregnant trying to buy a ticket last year. I got in, but I also had a dirty bum run up and touch my pregnant belly. Weird.... I was grossed out the whole night, and some stupid chick in front of me passed out and almost fell on me. My boyfriend had to pick her up and carry her over to the side. But that was my baby's first Difranco concert. I felt her squirming around to the music in there. It was actually quite an experience...

She comes to Cleveland quite often. I will be seeing her next time she comes (I'm embarrassed to admit now that I've never saw her perform). I will be sure to let you know how it the show is!!

She usually play small halls here too...I'd prefer small halls anyhow. She is soooo pretty!

Well, her popularity is growing, so I don't know how small the next show will be. All those lesbians will just eat you up, MsRuthie (no pun intended).... EvErYoNe should go see her. She's fabulous. And yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmy! That woman is like 5'2 with some...uh... great proportions! Yowza!

I've seen her four times, once driving five hours to see her in a smaller venue. I hate to say this, but I miss her earlier stuff so much. I was in the music store last weekend and seriously considered picking up "Evolve," but I'm still feeling kinda crusty and unimpressed with "Reckoning/Reveling." It's left a bad taste in my mouth... I understand that musicians do evolve, but the new stuff doesn't make my stomach drop like the old stuff does. I hear she's touring solo again soon...I look forward to that.

And not everyone at an Ani show is a lesbian, btw.
Granted a significant part of her fanbase stems from that community, but I'd say her fanbase is pretty damn diverse.

FemmeDemonica I was just joking about the lesbian thing. There are actually getting to be more guys at her shows even. She speaks about humanitarianism. She relates to everyone. Believe me, girl I am such a huge fan I've got a shrine to her. Hehe. I even have a signed picture. Hold on let me go light some candles. Hehe. She's is currently touring solo. She did in the spring, too. But the good news for you is that she dropped her band and she's working alone again. At least for a while. Everyone else is off doing there own things. Julie was on Conan the other night with Dar Williams. And Evolve is much better than Revelling/Reckoning. Which leads me to my second point... Ruthie I would go for Living in Clip, because it shows her at a crutial point in her career. And it's live and she's great live, not to mention she's really funny when she rambles on. But if you're not into live albums, well... I think I posted up on the top a list of which ones you'd like according to your musical preference... Evolve does rock, but not as cool, as FemmeDemonica pointed out, as her early stuff. That's the kind of music that really spoke to me as a woman. She has an eloquent way of putting all those mixed up emotions and feelings into words with a funky beat. Good luck!

Ooooh, I forgot to mention!!!! I'm seeing her tonight! Front row, live, in person. Nothing can match my excitement right now! Jumping around happy. I'm going to buy lots of t-shirts and sign lots of anti-death penalty and war petitions. It's going to be too much fun!!!!!!!!

Wow..you should frame it and put it in the shrine (you probably already did that though). That's a major snag! I get all pumped up like that when I get a good pic (I collect guitar pics)..most of them are customized somehow for the band/artist.

But to have a set list is awesome!
